Getting a tutor for your child is a great positive step you can make in assisting your child’s learning. But once you’ve made that step it can sometimes be difficult to know how to get the most out of the tutoring. To help with this here are some suggestions, provided by tutors, as to how you can assist your child learning when they have a tutor.

Be clear about goals and expectations

As a tutor, it can sometimes be difficult to work out what the goals or needs of a particular student are. This can lead to the first one or two sessions being spent adjusting the material and tutoring style to the student’s requirements. To streamline this process, try to ensure that at the beginning of the sessions you have a brief conversation with the tutor and your child about where your child is at and what you would like to achieve in the sessions.

Ensure good timing of sessions

Often organising ongoing session times is done between tutor and the student. Sometimes students schedule sessions at times when they may have just completed sport of other co-curricular activities which makes them tired and inattentive during sessions. As a tutor, it can be very hard to know if this is occurring as we don’t know the student's schedule. To prevent this, check the time's sessions are occurring and encourage the student to schedule sessions at times when they are likely to be ready to learn.

Encourage your child to complete the work set by the tutor

Sometimes tutors will set specific work for your child to complete to complement the material that they have covered in sessions. Occasionally, however, students don’t complete this work as they feel that there will be no consequences for not completing it. This can significantly hamper the child’s progress as material covered isn’t revised between sessions which leads to many sessions spent on the same content. The best way to combat this is to check with your child after the session whether the tutor has set any specific problems or work to be completed and then encourage them to do the work.
