VTAC applications are opening up soon, so that means Open Days are coming up too!
Open Days are an opportunity for universities to showcase what they can offer you. They are a great chance for you to get a feel for the culture of the university and see whether it is the right environment for you.
Yes, there are a lot of freebies around during Open Day, however, you should not just go to Open Days to grab all the freebies. You should use it as an opportunity to find out more about the university and in particular the course you are interested in.
Some universities are massive and proper planning beforehand will ensure that you can get the most out of it.
Here are some of my tips on how to get the most out of Open Days:
- PLAN!! – Most universities now would have or will release a list of ALL the events that they will be running on Open Day. Go to each university website, find that list, and start planning on which event you want to attend. Doing so will ensure that you go to all the events that are important to you, and if there is time for you to explore other things.
- Prepare questions for the people there – There will be people who are there to answer your questions. Most of these people will either be academics or students. Come to the Open Day with questions to ask that you wouldn’t be able to find answers to on the universities' website. These people are more than happy to answer your questions – as a past Open Day volunteer, I can tell you that it gets very boring for us to stand there, and not talk to people. Approach us and ask us your questions!
- Grab contact details – Don’t be afraid to get the contact details of people whom you met at Open Day if you feel you have more questions to ask them. Most people will be willing to share their email address with you.
- Talk to the students – As mentioned before there will be current students around to answer your questions. These people are doing the course that you are looking to do, and so they know the workload amongst other things. They are the best source of information and they will tell you straight up the highs and lows of the course.
Open Day may seem to be targeted at Year 11 and 12 students and that is true to an extent, but almost anyone can attend. It never hurts to start planning your future career!
So, what are you waiting for, start planning now to ensure that you can get the most out of the Open Day!
