When I graduated Year 12, I didn't have a job, any ideas about my career, or basically any concrete plans beyond knowing I wanted to go to university. It wasn't until I began to see posts on Facebook of other people advertising their tutoring services that the idea occurred to me: maybe this could work out for me, too!
In all honesty, my initial motivation to become a tutor arose simply from the fact that I was bored, wanted to find a part-time job, and it seemed like an "easy" option. Little did I know…
In hindsight, now I can appreciate that the task of finding my own work was much harder than I anticipated. Tasks ranged from compiling countless resources, to creating my own advertising materials, not to mention experimenting with how best to teach students: all of this alone.
However, I was surprised and glad to find out that tutoring went beyond a part-time job for me: it became a passion, validating all of my hard work in starting out. I realised that being able to support students and help them realise their own capabilities was the greatest reward in itself. I didn't need a very high ATAR to get into my university course, but finally, my hard work in school was actually useful for something!
At the beginning of 2017, after one year of experience, I decided to apply to be a tutor with Learnmate. I was excited that not only was I allowed to continue to pursue private tutoring, it was actively encouraged. Now, having been working with Learnmate for about a year and a half, I can't recommend the experience enough. To stumble upon a like-minded community of other passionate tutors, as well as generous access to a wealth of resources, was, and still is, incredible.
I love tutoring because it's a job that requires creativity, tenacity, and a commitment to continual improvement. Being a tutor allows me to work in the field I am passionate about, and is equally an amazing opportunity for personal growth.
