In the new age of technology, what even is online tutoring? And how much does it differ from in-person tutoring – does it even compare?
Online tutoring generally takes place through a web-based video call platform such as Skype, and tutors and students can use software to share notes so that they can work together (like Google Docs or Zoom). Tutors draw from new technologies (depending on the subject) which have not traditionally been used in tutoring. These can considerably enhance learning. Also, let’s not forget that working with online technologies is an incredibly important skill to develop for the future.
One of the biggest advantages of online tutoring for both student and tutor is the time saved. With no need to spend valuable time travelling to and from an agreed location, you can benefit from tutoring in the comfort of your own home – or anywhere else. This also allows more flexibility with the time of lessons. Usually, tutors will reduce their rates if they don’t need to travel anywhere. Online tutoring is truly convenient to everyone involved.
However, the key drawcard of online tutoring is its ability to give everyone access to quality tutoring. There are many students and tutors living in areas far from the major cities, and online tutoring helps to close the education gap: if you can access Wi-Fi, you can access a quality tutor.
In fact, online tutoring isn’t that different from in-person tutoring. Tutors and students still communicate in real time and can easily discuss and work through whatever the student needs. Students do need to be organised for online tutoring and ensure they can share their work with a tutor digitally, yet this is a great skill to develop. If students send through their work ahead of time, tutors will come to sessions well-prepared, leading to more productive and well-organised tutoring sessions.
