Learning To Work Smarter, Not Harder
Your success in the final years in school relies upon a very important aspect: how well you manage to organise your time. The very highest scorers do well not just because they are naturally intelligent and focused; they know how to manage their life in the most efficient way, and most importantly, to maximise their learning in the shortest amount of time. Being more efficient can only benefit you, and allow you to do more of the things you love! Here are 3 tips you can use to improve efficiency.
- Plan briefly in advance: for some people, planning involves hours spent with colour-coded highlighters and dot-points. Don’t let planning become a form of procrastination, but instead construct quick plans before studying which allow you to remember and focus on the most important things to do. If you can come up with simple learning goals before a study session, you are much more likely to be able to feel a sense of accomplishment. For example, instead of jotting down “study Literature”, you could plan to “read and annotate 20 pages” of a text – something that will make the task feel less intimidating.
- Allow time to relax and do what you love. Working yourself without respite is not the smartest way of studying, as being tired and burnt-out will actually do damage to your ability to learn. Leave some free evenings for sport, music or hanging out with friends to make sure you’re getting the rest you need.
- Work out at what time of day you are most productive. This is going to be different for every person, but many of us are at our most efficient about an hour or two after we wake up! Night owls might be more efficient in the evening, but if you can identify the window of time in which you find it easiest to work, try and keep this free to do the most important things you have to do.
