We're excited for you to meet Shamini A, one of Learnmate's most experienced heroes. Shamini has a wealth of experience to share as a retired teacher turned tutor on Learnmate.

1. Tell us about yourself and some of your goals on Learnmate.

I am a retired teacher from a well -respected Grammar school having taught Physics and Mathematics for 27 years, for students from year 7-12 managing skills at all ability levels.

I am passionate about ensuring that my students are inspired by their learning, and are given the means to achieve their true potential. Prior to my teaching at secondary level, I spent four years in Sri Lanka working as an Assistant Lecturer in Physics at the University of Sri Lanka.

2. What inspired you to become a tutor?

Near the end of my career, I started helping some of my friend’s sons and daughters. I enjoyed giving one to one lesson and I received great feedback from the students. After my retirement, I have become a full -time tutor.

3. What do you find most rewarding about tutoring?

Tutoring should be about more than just achieving success in Mathematics or VCE Exams. The most rewarding experience comes with helping students to grow and develop their skills to be better equipped for higher studies, and their careers.

4. Do you have a story you can share with us that gives us an insight about you?

When I was teaching (1996) in a private school in United Kingdom I had to mentor a year 12 student. He was constantly getting into trouble with all the staff teaching him. As a form tutor and Physics teacher to this student, I had to take a massive challenge to turn him around.

At the end he was successful to read medicine at Cambridge University, UK. It was a surprise to me when I met him in St Thomas’s Hospital (London) Cardiology ward after 10 years working as a Senior Registrar looking after my cousin, who had bypass surgery.

It was a remarkable experience and is a great example why I consider the teaching profession such a rewarding profession.

5. What can families and students expect from you as their tutor?

I am a tutor who can devote my time, and I am always ready to help students if they are committed to making the most of my tutoring.

Students can expect a significant improvement in their mentality, performance and results if they decide to work with me.
