If you are stressed out by school, it can be tempting to cut all distractions out. But make a bit of time for an extracurricular activity or two! Not only will they help you destress, but also will help you develop important skills. Doing extracurricular activities while in school prepares you for life after graduation. Often, they help you develop a variety of soft and hard skills you will take with you throughout life.
What are extracurricular activities?
Extracurricular activities are activities undertaken by students outside of school. These activities are usually voluntary, and often include a group of other people your age participating together.
Examples of extracurricular activities
There are a vast range of extracurricular activities available in Australia – there is something for everyone to participate in! Some popular extracurricular activities include instrumental lessons, band, orchestra, drama, performing arts, dance, sports, outdoor activities, academic competitions, leadership and community service, volunteering and more.
Benefits of extracurricular activities
There are a variety of benefits to undertaking extracurricular activities alongside school. Let’s explore some of the best benefits:
- You will learn important time-management skills as you balance extracurriculars with school.
- You will see personal growth as a result of undertaking activities that supplement your school learning.
- Your confidence may improve as you gain strengths in new areas and develop.
- Most of the time, you will find new friends in the areas of your interests, friendships which can be lifelong. Spending time with other people will also help you to develop important skills in team-work.
- You can often point out skills or competencies developed in your extracurriculars when it comes to applying for work or different opportunities.
How to manage school and extracurricular activities
Make sure when you are choosing extracurricular activities that it is a time commitment you can keep. There’s no point trying to take on rowing five days a week if you know you aren’t going to be able to manage it in addition to your studies! Make sure you create a schedule if you’re struggling, and remember that you can always drop your extracurricular activity if you need to.
