The 2025 VCE results have now been released, with thousands of students around Victoria rising at 7am on Thursday, 11 December to find out how they scored this year.
This article will provide a snapshot of how Victorian students performed this year, including by highlighting achievements by school and individuals. Whether you're a parent, student, educator or simply results-curious, here’s a look at what schools and students achieved in 2025.
VCE & ATAR Highlights in 2025
Here are the major numbers that defined the 2025 cohort:
- 65,586 students completed the VCE (a completion rate of 97.3%).
- 42 students achieved a perfect 99.95 ATAR (comprising 27 males, 14 females and 1 gender x - a reversal from 2024 which saw 33 males and 8 females achieve the perfect ATAR).
- 664 students achieved 1 or more perfect 50 study scores, with a total of 719 perfect study scores issued.
- 23,494 study scores of 40 or above, representing 25% of all study scores.
- The average ATAR in 2025 was 69.48, fractionally lower than the average of 69.52 in 2024.
- By gender, the average ATAR for girls was 70.20, the average ATAR for boys was 68.60, and the average ATAR for gender neutral students was 72.40.
Note on ATARs: The ATAR is a rank, not a score, that is used by tertiary institutions for course selection and to prioritise offers to students.
How to read study scores and ATARs
What are study scores
Study scores represent a student’s performance against students in their state cohort, not their raw mark. Study scores are subject-specific and are provided as a scaled score out of 50 by the VCAA. A 40+ study score, for instance, places a student in approximately the top 9% of students for that subject, while a perfect 50 study score is only given to the top ~0.3% of students.
When reading how schools performed in 2025 and how they rank, consider the following:
- Percentage of Study Scores above 40: How many students in a school's cohort achieve exceptional results in subjects, ie. are in the top 9% of their cohort;
- Median Study Score: What the midpoint score achieved by students was in 2025, which provides a snapshot view of how the overall cohort performed.
Both these metrics offer an overall insight into how strong a school's cohort was as well as how well a school's program supported students to achieve their best this year.

What is the ATAR
The ATAR is short for "Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank" and is a percentile rank issued to students when they complete VCE to enable universities to assess how well a student achieved in Year 12 relative to other students in their cohort. For example, if a student receives a 75.00 ATAR, it means they did better than approximately 75% of their cohort.
The highest ATAR that a student can achieve is 99.95, ie. they performed better than 99.95% of their peers. The average ATAR is usually around 70.00, but varies state by state.

Top VCE Schools Based on ATAR
The metrics that are most commonly referred to as the hallmark of a school's overall academic performance are usually the percentage of students who achieved certain ATARs and the Median ATAR achieved for a cohort. Based on publicly available data at the time of publishing, the following schools had the most impressive ATAR highlights in 2025:
Schools with the highest % of ATARs 99+:
| Rank | School | % ATAR 99+ | Median ATAR |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Melbourne High School | 18% | 95.80 |

How IB Impacts School Results
When analysing school VCE results, it is important to note that many schools offer VCE and the International Baccalaureate (IB), such as Wesley College and Lauriston Girls' School. The IB program is an internationally attractive alternative course to the VCE.
Because a significant proportion of top-performing students at these schools opt to do IB instead of VCE, the VCE results for dual-pathway schools often don't paint the full picture. We need to wait until IB results are published to get a better combined view of outcomes. IB results are due to be released on 17 December 2025.
What the 2025 Results Mean for Students in 2026
While school rankings provide a fascinating snapshot of collective performance, the 2025 data reinforces that high achievement isn't exclusive to just a handful of schools. With over 23,000 study scores of 40+ distributed across the state, the key takeaway is that individual preparation and subject mastery remain the biggest drivers of success.
Here is how to interpret these findings for your own 2026 strategy:
- School rankings are benchmarks, not guarantees: As the data shows, even top-ranked schools have a spread of results. A high median ATAR indicates a strong cohort, but your personal score will ultimately depend on your own rank within your school. Don't rely solely on your school's reputation to carry your ATAR.
- Target the '40' threshold: The statistics highlight that a 40+ study score places you in the top 9% of the state. Rather than obsessing over the perfect 99.95, focus your energy on pushing your individual subjects toward that 40+ benchmark. This is where the bulk of a strong ATAR is built.
- Identify gaps early: The slight fluctuation in the state average ATAR suggests that competition remains steady. If you are aiming for a top-tier score, use these holidays to identify which of your subjects might need extra attention to reach the 40+ range.
- Personalised support makes the difference: With thousands of students achieving top scores, the difference often comes down to personalised feedback. Whether it's extending a strength or fixing a weakness, external support can help bridge the gap between an average study score and an exceptional one.
