Extension 2 centres on the Major Work — a sustained creative composition or critical response developed independently over the year, accompanied by a Reflection Statement and Viva Voce.
Tutors guide students through the entire Major Work process: concept development, drafting, revision, the Reflection Statement and preparation for the Viva Voce examination.
Flexible online or in-person sessions across Sydney and NSW, with most tutors ready to start within 24–48 hours.

HSC English Extension 2 is the only HSC course built entirely around the production of a sustained independent work. There is no exam in the traditional sense — instead, students produce a Major Work (either a creative composition such as a short story collection, poetry suite, screenplay or critical response), a Reflection Statement that analyses their creative and intellectual process, and a Viva Voce where they defend their work orally. This level of independence requires a fundamentally different kind of support from what Advanced or Extension 1 demands.
A dedicated Extension 2 tutor acts as a mentor throughout the Major Work process — helping students develop their concept, refine their voice, navigate the drafting and revision cycle, craft a compelling Reflection Statement and prepare for the Viva Voce. The best tutors bring their own creative or critical writing expertise to the process. For the core HSC English courses, see HSC English Advanced tutors. For the independent critical study that underpins Extension 2, see HSC English Extension 1 tutors.
The Extension 2 Major Work is a year-long independent project that requires sustained creative or critical effort, careful time management, and the ability to reflect analytically on your own compositional process. Many students find the open-ended nature of the Major Work both exciting and overwhelming — the freedom to choose your own form, genre and subject matter means there is no textbook to follow and no prescribed structure. This is where a mentor-style tutor makes an enormous difference.
Learnmate connects you directly with tutors who have deep Extension 2 expertise — including a 99.50 ATAR graduate who scored Extension 2 48/50 (ranked 1st in their cohort) alongside Extension 1 49/50, a tutor with a Master of Writing and 1,000+ hours of English tutoring experience who brings postgraduate-level creative writing expertise to the mentoring process, an HSC marker with 10 years of classroom teaching and 15 years of private tutoring, a tutor whose students have achieved state ranks in English with 83% receiving Band 6/E4 results, and qualified teachers with up to 25 years in the classroom. Tutors are ready to start within 24–48 hours.

Extension 2 is fundamentally a creative or critical writing course, and one of the tutors on Learnmate holds a Master of Writing with over 1,000 hours of English tutoring experience from primary to university level. She brings postgraduate-level understanding of composition, voice, structure and revision to the Major Work mentoring process — expertise that goes well beyond what a typical HSC tutor can offer.
The Major Work isn’t a single assessment — it’s a process that unfolds over the entire year, from initial concept and proposal through multiple drafts to the final composition, Reflection Statement and Viva Voce. Tutors on Learnmate support students at every stage, providing structured feedback on drafts, helping refine the creative or critical vision, and preparing students for the Viva Voce examination where they must defend their work and process orally.

Extension 2 students choose from a range of approved forms for their Major Work, including short fiction, poetry suites, screenplays, speeches, critical responses and imaginative recreations. Each form has its own conventions, structural demands and assessment criteria. Tutors help students select a form that aligns with their strengths, develop their voice within that form, and navigate the sustained drafting and revision process that produces a polished final composition.
The Reflection Statement and Viva Voce together account for a significant portion of the Extension 2 assessment. The Reflection Statement requires analytical writing about the student’s own creative process, while the Viva Voce tests their ability to articulate and defend their compositional choices orally. Tutors provide targeted preparation for both components, helping students develop the metacognitive vocabulary and reflective depth that NESA rewards.
Extension 2 students must also be studying Extension 1 and Advanced English. Many tutors on Learnmate teach across all three courses, providing integrated support. See HSC English Extension 1 tutors for independent critical study support, and HSC English Advanced tutors for Module-based support. Browse the full range of HSC English tutors.
