At Learnmate, we’re proud to showcase the incredible tutors who bring energy, empathy and expertise into every lesson. In this edition of Meet Our Tutors, we introduce one of the most sought after on Learnmate, Stephane B! With over 12 years of tutoring experience, he has helped countless students exceed their expectations and develop lasting confidence in Maths and Physics.
1. Tell us a little about yourself, including your teaching philosophy, personality, and how you connect with students.
I worked in Switzerland as a school teacher and now as a tutor in Australia. I have a real passion for tutoring and love the moments where something just clicks in a student’s mind and I get to instantly see their confidence go up. I believe all students can reach their full potential by enthusiastically building their knowledge and confidence. This translates into my hobbies too. In my spare time, I love to do astrophotography and I love to cook! There is something so satisfying in following an exact recipe or formula and getting the perfect result!
2. What inspired you to become a tutor/teacher? What do you enjoy the most about it?
I just love explaining things and creatively looking for new ways to teach. A new concept might not immediately click, so my job as a tutor is to look for other ways to get it to click. The greater the challenge, the more satisfying it is to me to see my students understand their topic and actually start enjoying maths and physics.
3. How do you adapt your teaching approach to meet the unique needs of each student? What strategies do you use to make lessons effective and engaging?
I have experienced tutoring students with special needs. This has helped me to try make lessons fun, interactive and to always be patient, never rushing them to understand a concept at a speed they are not comfortable with. I also try to differentiate what is a genuine gap in knowledge and what might be merely a lack of confidence. I view my role as a tutor as part-time teaching part-time coaching. Diagnosing what’s missing in my student’s knowledge and then filling the gap is very rewarding.
4. Beyond tutoring, are there any resources, tools, or projects you’ve developed to help students succeed — for example, practice materials, study guides, or other initiatives? We’d love to hear about them.
Finding quality resources has always been a challenge for me. A lot of things out there on the web are either inaccurate or don’t match Australian terminology. So I began making my own practice SACs and practice exams to help my students. This eventually led me to build a website called MathPractice.com.au where teachers and students can download tons of practice PDFs. Because my question bank has now grown so large, every time a student selects a topic and generates a paper, they will get a different paper every time.
It’s made me really proud to see students using my website and providing me feedback on how much the practice papers have helped them.
5. Can you share a story about a student you helped to overcome challenges or achieve a significant goal? What was the outcome, and how did you support them?
One student I tutored was really struggling with the language as she had just moved from overseas. She enjoyed maths, but was struggling. Not only did she respond well to tutoring, but she actually went on to complete a masters degree in mathematics which made me so proud as a tutor. True, not all students will go on to complete mathematics degrees, but this experience will always be precious to me.
6. What advice do you have for students who are struggling to stay motivated or overcome academic challenges?
Try to enjoy it. Once you start to understand maths and science, you will actually start to see real beauty in it. You start looking at your work with real satisfaction. It’s like this with all things in life. And if you’re struggling, reach out for help. Often a little help can go a long way.
7. What can families expect from you if they engage you as their tutor?
A passionate, gentle, patient, and enthusiastic tutor. I love what I do and I hope to share that passion with my students.
