At Learnmate, we’re proud to showcase tutors who bring expertise, real-world experience, and a genuine passion for helping students achieve their academic goals. In this edition of Meet Our Tutors, we introduce Chuchu L, an experienced economics and commerce tutor who supports students across A-Level, IB, IGCSE, AP, ATAR, university foundation and diploma programs.

1. Tell us a little about yourself, including your teaching philosophy, personality, and how you connect with students.

I specialise in economics for A‑Level, AP, IGCSE, IB, and all Australian state curricula (e.g., VCE, HSC, SACE, QCE, WACE). My teaching philosophy is to connect abstract theories with real‑world business cases, so students understand concepts rather than only memorise them. I am patient and encouraging. I offer full‑English or bilingual (English‑Mandarin/Cantonese) lessons, listen closely to students’ difficulties, and adapt to learners from diverse international school backgrounds, drawing on over 7000 hours of tutoring experience.

2. What inspired you to become a tutor/teacher? What do you enjoy the most about it?

I became a tutor because I saw many capable students struggle with tough international‑curriculum content and exam skills. I love seeing my students grow in confidence alongside their grades. Nothing is more rewarding than watching them hit their targets, whether that is top exam marks, university offers or success in academic competitions.

3. How do you adapt your teaching approach to meet the unique needs of each student? What strategies do you use to make lessons effective and engaging?

I usually find out each student’s weak points, whether they have gaps in theory or poor exam techniques. I adjust lesson depth, language and practice tasks accordingly. Lessons use daily life examples and case studies instead of rote learning. I provide targeted past‑paper practice and actionable feedback for one‑on‑one or small‑group sessions to keep classes practical and engaging.

4. Can you share a story about a student you helped to overcome challenges or achieve a significant goal? What was the outcome, and how did you support them?

One A‑Level Economics student grasped basic theories but lost heavy marks on evaluative essays and was far from their target A grade in mocks. I taught them exam mark‑scheme logic and essay frameworks, and gave detailed written feedback on their answers. With consistent targeted practice, they achieved an A in the final exam and secured their desired university commerce offer. It proves structured guidance can unlock students’ existing potential.

5. What advice do you have for students who are struggling to stay motivated or overcome academic challenges?

Do not take low practice scores as a final judgement of your ability. Break big goals down into small weekly targets. Prioritise reviewing your mistakes over doing endless new questions. Stay consistent instead of last‑minute cramming, and do not be afraid to voice confusion. Small steady improvements build remarkable results over time.

6. What can families expect from you if they engage you as their tutor?

Families can expect personalised lessons aligned with their child’s curriculum and goals, covering school improvement and formal exams. Bilingual support is available to ease language barriers. I deliver clear feedback on progress and set meaningful follow‑up tasks. I will keep open communication with families, focusing on both exam performance and building long‑term independent learning skills.
