At Learnmate, we’re proud to showcase the incredible tutors who bring energy, empathy and expertise into every lesson. In this edition of Meet Our Tutors, we introduce an enthusiastic and supportive tutor - Carina C - who is passionate about making learning accessible and empowering every student.

With a flexible approach tailored to individual needs, Carina is helping students turn self-doubt into confidence, one small win at a time. Whether it’s supporting early readers or challenging advanced learners, Carina's goal remains the same: make learning meaningful, personal and positive.

1. Tell us a little about yourself, including your teaching philosophy, personality, and how you connect with students, Carina.

It’s simple to tell a student how to answer a question; instead, what takes practice is how a student can learn independently and think critically- which is what I hope to instill in each session! I consider myself a lifelong learner, and I hope to spark this curiosity for knowledge in the students I tutor.

I bring a warm presence to each student’s environment, which helps them to concentrate on their learning. This is particularly important when conventional classroom settings do not provide enough support for some individuals.

No matter where students start, everyone is capable of achieving what success means for them!

2. What inspired you to become a tutor/teacher? What do you enjoy the most about it?

I have been taught by a myriad of excellent teachers over the years, where I continue to employ their principles and empathy to inspire the next generation of learners! I enjoy tutoring because I am able to provide for my current students the education that I was, and still am, fortunate to receive.

I began in a tutoring position at my secondary school, where I felt supported by the staff, to the point that I became encouraged to continue this work on my own. Now that I am a teaching student, I relish seeing students’ improvements in real time- both in the content they’ve learned, and their improved communication skills overall, especially when speaking to me.

What I enjoy most about tutoring is watching students grow in confidence—not just in their schoolwork, but in how they see themselves as learners. That shift from “I can’t do this” to “I’ve got this!” never gets old.

3. How do you adapt your teaching approach to meet the unique needs of each student? What strategies do you use to make lessons effective and engaging?

From the first session, it’s important to establish goals, whether the student wants to grasp a particular concept in the short-term, or work towards a VCE study score over a longer period.

This opens up the conversation between myself and the student/guardian, which means I can ask further questions into how they learn best. For younger children, this also includes close observation of their verbal cues and body language, as well as providing details of any known learning difficulties where applicable.

Keeping students motivated to achieve their goals can be aided with multimedia resources- such as a mix of online and handwritten tasks- and educational games as a reward after a tough task!

4. Can you share a story about a student you helped to overcome challenges or achieve a significant goal? What was the outcome, and how did you support them?

I currently tutor a student where, at their first session, they were reserved and did not feel as engaged in tasks. After some time, they have gone from being years behind their class’ abilities, to scoring above-average, and even requesting extension work! While a tutor can provide many resources to facilitate learning, it’s ultimately crucial to provide space for each student to learn at their own pace, even if this is initially not on par with their cohort.

On top of this, I have also worked with multiple VCE students that have achieved highly, receiving offers from their desired courses, and generally carry more-sustainable study habits.

5. What advice do you have for students who are struggling to stay motivated or overcome academic challenges?

For VCE students, having a score in mind to achieve is one part, but knowing their desired pathway post-school can be more helpful, as this opens up their mindset beyond the school environment. This also makes it easier to correlate how the content they’re learning relates to the real world- which keeps them on track for that final stretch!

For younger students in particular, establishing tutoring as part of their routine, and not seen as a chore, can assist their motivation. Learning persistence from the start not only gets them through any immediate learning challenges, but also establishes a skill which is important for grasping difficult concepts in higher education. Even if I am no longer their tutor, this sets students up for lifelong independent learning.

6. What can families expect from you if they engage you as their tutor?

I enter each session with a calm and friendly presence, aiming to be on the student’s side while also taking families’ concerns into consideration. It may take a couple sessions for students to feel comfortable- especially if I am in their house- but my patience with each student allows them to stay focused and motivated at their own pace.

I look forward to seeing your requests, and answering any questions!
