🤝 Meet our heroes: Aric L - Learnmate Blog

We're excited for you to meet our tutor Aric L, one of Learnmate's long time heroes. Aric is a highly sought-after tutor who has been tutoring on Learnmate for over 5 years!

1. Tell us about yourself and some of your goals on Learnmate.

Hey there! I am Aric, a chemistry tutor with 5 years of experience in helping my students achieve their study score goals! I am currently a second-year medical student at the University of Melbourne after completing a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Scholar's program) at Monash University in 2021. Outside of these commitments, I enjoy playing golf with family and friends and reading inspirational books by world leaders, with my favourite being One Man's View of the World by Lee Kuan Yew.

My goals in tutoring are to assist more students achieve their chemistry study score goals, whether that is a Raw 50 or otherwise. Additionally, I hope that through our lessons, my students can also develop an interest in Chemistry and see the long-term benefit of the subject, whether that is for their future career or dishing out fun-facts during social gatherings!

2. What inspired you to become a tutor?

My chemistry tutor was my source of inspiration. He allowed me to see Chemistry beyond the fixed topics that we learnt. This enabled me to see the bigger picture and reasoning behind how and why questions and formulated a certain way, which was the key reason I was able to tackle the challenge questions in exam with confidence and enabled me to score a Raw 50.

3. What do you find most rewarding about tutoring?

Firstly, it is most rewarding when I am able to help my students understand challenging concepts that baffled them because not only will they score well in future questions, I know they are now able to share the knowledge with their classmates and friends!

Secondly, the challenge of working out some difficult problems brought by my students is also something I really enjoy because it allows me to constantly improve myself as a tutor.

Lastly, being able to interact with my students, give them tips on how to manage high school and possibly university life so that they do not make the same mistakes I did.

4. Do you have a story you can share with us that gives us an insight about you?

This is a story of discipline and how it enabled me to achieve 3 Raw 50s (Chemistry, Accounting, Further Maths). When I was in high school, I was not the top of the class, even in Year 12, I remembered clearly that there was another favourite student amongst the Chemistry teachers because she was truly amazing academically. However, that did not stop me from being on par with her and achieving the Raw 50 I wanted.

Every week, I would dedicate a couple of hours after school working on chemistry questions, on Sunday, I remember clearly heading to Monash University with a mate and analysing through many VCAA papers to see how the marks were allocated and the responses needed to obtain those marks.

I wholeheartedly believe that to score well in Chemistry it is not just about solving the hardest questions or being the brightest, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, to provide responses that examiners are looking for, that are tailored to the marking scheme. And that is something every student can do, but simply requires discipline and dedication to work through hundreds of questions consistently even if they may be repetitive until the exam is over.

5. What can families and students expect from you as their tutor?

I am an extremely cheerful and easy-going person and I always ensure to bring that across my tutoring sessions. Students can expect a class that always provides a learning opportunity through challenging questions that we will solve together, but also endless amounts of fun as we tackle through the world of chemistry. Parents can expect a professional tutor whose goal is to help their children achieve the study score goals and very prompt replies.
