When exam season rolls around, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by everything on your plate. Between revising notes, juggling multiple subjects, and staying on top of school deadlines, it can be hard to know where to start.

One of the most effective ways to prepare for your HSC exams is by working through past exam papers. Not only do they help you understand the kinds of questions you’re likely to see, but they also allow you to practise managing your time, structuring responses, and applying knowledge under pressure.

To help make things easier, we’ve put together a subject-by-subject guide to popular HSC exams - with links to official past papers and marking guidelines. Whether you’re aiming for a Band 6 or just want to feel more prepared, this guide has you covered.

If you’d like structured help using past papers and marking guidelines, browse our HSC tutors to find the right support for your subjects.

HSC practice exams vs HSC past papers

Past papers are real NESA papers from previous years. Practice exams are trial papers created by schools, tutors or publishers to mirror style and difficulty. Use past papers to benchmark against the real standard, and practice exams to add volume and target weak topics between official papers.

How to Make the Most of Past Exam Papers

Working through past exams is one of the most powerful revision strategies — but only if you’re using them effectively.

Here’s how to get the most value from them:

  • Start recent and work backwards to spot trends.

  • Sit papers like the real thing: permitted materials only; one timer; strict time splits.

  • Spend marks, not minutes: allocate time in proportion to marks; move on and return later.

  • Mark like a marker: use guidelines/Notes from the Marking Centre to identify why marks were lost (content gap, misread, method/accuracy, time).

  • Close the loop fast: re-attempt missed or guessed questions within 48–72 hours (no notes first, then with notes).

  • Keep a mistake journal and review it before each new paper.

  • Track progress in a simple spreadsheet (paper, raw score, topics lost, time pressure).

FAQs

Where do I download HSC past papers and marking guidelines?

NESA publishes free HSC past papers, marking guidelines, sample answers and notes from the Marking Centre for each subject. You can find them easily by clicking the relevant links in this blog above.

How far back should I practise HSC past papers?

Focus on the last two to three years first, then work backwards for variety once you’re close to your target score and feel comfortable with the most recent exams.

How often should I sit full timed HSC practice exams?

Aim for one full timed paper per subject each week in the final month, with shorter targeted sets earlier in the term.

What’s the difference between HSC practice exams and HSC past papers?

Past papers are real NESA exams; practice exams are trials by schools, tutors or publishers. Use both - past papers for benchmarking, practice exams for volume on weak topics.

Do I need to read Notes from the Marking Centre?

Yes - they show common errors and the features of high-scoring responses so you can mark like a marker and lift your result.
