Did you know? There are more than 90 studies (or subjects) to choose from in the VCE, and there are choices within those studies as well. For example, within Mathematics, students can choose studies on General to Further Maths. Students can also choose from more than 40 languages, from Mandarin to French, Japanese and Spanish. Within VCE, students can undertake vocational education and training (VET) through School-Based Apprenticeships or at a training organisation. Once a student finishes their VCE, they can then go onto study a course at university.
The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is one of the qualifications you can get if you finish Year 11 and 12 at high school in Victoria. After completing the VCE students get an ATAR score to use to apply for university or TAFE. All VCE students get a statement of VCE study scores from the VCAA, but only students who’ve applied for tertiary courses through VTAC get an ATAR statement. Most rankings use the percentage of raw study scores of 40 out of 50 and above achieved at a given school in the Victorian Certificate of Education assessment, the so-called VCE40+.
To be awarded the VCE, a student must successfully complete at least:
- All 4 units of an English subject
- Three additional Unit 3/4 sequences
- Pass with a satisfactory of at least 16 units out of the normal 20-24 units
VCE studies are assessed both internally (in school) and externally (through the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). During units 1/2 all assessment is internal, while in units 3/4 assessment is conducted both internally and externally.
