10 top tips to excel in HSC English this year
Looking for study strategies to excel in HSC English? Here's my top 10 tips:
1. Read the book. Then re-read the book
Simple, but essential. Knowing the text you are studying makes it easier to decode what the teacher is saying and helps you pick up on what the exam question might be. The more you engage with your HSC English prescribed text, the more critical analysis you will be able to craft, so re-read it as the exams approach.
2. Watch the movie (if there is one)
If you are hearing me say, ‘just watch the film,’ re-read Point 1. However, a movie can be a good way to combine relaxation with study while you gain a fresh perspective of your HSC English novel or play. Stay critical of the adaptation and reflect on your own interpretation as you watch.
3. Learn your rubric
The outline of your English unit, known as ‘the rubric,’ is lifted straight out of the syllabus. Get your hands on this and do not let it go. Memorise key phrases and search for synonyms to include in your essays. HSC English exam questions will be written from these rubrics, so knowing them is the key to your success.
4. Write notes that contain the key ingredients
The essential ingredients for a good essay include:
- A collection of well-chosen quotes to memorise.
- Identification of techniques in the quotes and analysis of their purpose/meaning.
- The context of the author.
- How this all links back to the rubric.
Include quotes with techniques that your teacher keeps repeating, but search for some independently too. Working with an HSC English tutor can help you unearth some hidden gems of analysis to help you stand out.
5. Plan practice essays
Look at sample HSC English questions and give yourself 5 minutes to plan your essays in dot-point form. This is good practice for arguably the most challenging part of the HSC English exam: thinking under pressure.
6. Edit your notes to fill in gaps
If you plan an essay and find that you do not have the key ingredients for the plan in your notes, go back and include the necessary quotes and analysis. Your notes are not set in stone; they should be regularly updated as needed.
7. Write out the challenging paragraphs or essays and get feedback
Through the process, you will find questions that stump you. Take this opportunity to write them out and seek out personalised feedback on how to improve them. A teacher or an HSC English tutor can help support you in working through these roadblocks.
8. Imagine fresh questions from the rubric
Run out of HSC practice questions? Take your rubric and imagine receiving an essay question based around a key word or phrase. Would you be able to answer it confidently? This process of imagining a myriad of questions will help you stay flexible and answer the question you are given on the day.
9. Do short answer questions
Short answer questions will keep your analytical brain sharp, help you practice writing under time pressure, and maintain your sophisticated expression. This is a great way to revise when you are short on time or in a motivational slump.
10. Look after yourself
As with any of life’s challenges, you will need to prioritise yourself in the stress of it all. Take opportunities to go for walks, hang out with your pets, or see your mates. Your wellbeing is more important than the HSC.
Conclusion
Studying for the HSC English papers can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategies and support, you can approach the subject with confidence. Whether you need help mastering your rubric, analysing texts, or refining your essay-writing skills, getting personalised guidance can make all the difference.
