We're supremely excited to introduce you to Jaye S, a very talented and experienced tutor on Learnmate. Jaye has an incredible array of talents and a wealth of experience and knowledge to share, and we can't wait for you to meet her!
1. Tell us about yourself and your background, Jaye!
I have a Bachelorâs Degree in International and Global Relations and a Masters Degree in Non-For-Profit Management, both with distinction averages. I have been a private tutor for ten years, teaching over 150 students in Australia, the UK, India, Spain, Thailand, China and Turkey. In particular I have experience in critical thinking, essay writing and exam preparation. I have a valid WWCC.
I speak Spanish, advanced French, Portuguese and Turkish, and basic Italian. I have also worked and volunteered in the humanitarian and development sector for ten years, focusing primarily on refugee and asylum seeker issues, climate change, technology and education.
2. What inspired you to become a tutor?
I believe very deeply in education, and I really enjoy watching people improve and deepen their understanding and confidence. Tutoring has been a gift, as it has enabled me to engage with teaching, while also exploring other pursuits such as my PhD and role as Head of Content for Polis Analysis, a political analysis startup based in London.
3. What do you find most rewarding about tutoring?
The lifelong skills subjects can teach, particularly as we prepare for a future uncertain with technological change. Subjects such as history teach source analysis, critical thinking and questioning of assumptions. Others such as social work, geography and politics teach responsiveness and help students to engage in the world in an informed, proactive manner. Languages teach flexibility to new ideas and the necessity of making and recovering from mistakes in adapting a perspective of lifelong learning. Literature helps students with empathy and emotional intelligence.
4. Do you have a story you can share with us that gives us an insight about you?
Comment from recent student:
Jaye has been tutoring me with my studies for about six months, and in that time she has changed the course of my work in remarkable ways by making material more research-based, more interesting, and most important, helping me be more analytic with my assignments by challenging my thinking with alternative theories. Jaye has expertise in various sectors and tailors lessons to her students' individual learning styles, I highly recommend her as a tutor and mentor.
5. What can families and students expect from you as their tutor?
I am quick, upfront and clear in my communication. I am best working with students for a period of time regularly, ideally twice a week, and gradually working on building understanding and then ability to consistently implement what they have learnt. I work best when working at the studentâs speed, slowing down when concepts are more difficult for them and speeding up when they understand well.
I see my role to support the studentâs teachers and parents, and so always follow closely what the student is working on at school, and speak with the parents regularly to make sure we are on the same page. Along the way I focus on supporting skills such as time and information management. I believe this approach gives the student the best chance at building their autonomy, confidence and mastery of a topic.
