Learnmate is an online marketplace that connects families and students with 700+ independent tutors and coaches across 110+ subjects in Australia. Unlike tutoring agencies, tutors on Learnmate set their own rates and deliver lessons directly to you — we provide the platform, secure payments, verified profiles, reviews and support to help you find the right fit.
There are two ways to find a tutor:
Once you've found your tutor, schedule lessons through the platform and start learning — online or in-person, anywhere in Australia.
Tutors on Learnmate set their own hourly rates, starting from just $30/hr + GST — up to 50% cheaper than tutoring agencies. The mean hourly rate charged on Learnmate in 2025 was $62/hr. Here are the average hourly rates on Learnmate in 2025:
Learnmate is more affordable because we're a marketplace, not an agency. Tutors keep 70–77% of their earnings (compared to 35–60% at agencies), and those savings are passed directly to families. There are no lock-in contracts, no fixed terms, and optional prepaid packages are available for additional savings.
Learnmate is a marketplace, not an agency — you choose your tutor, see their full profile, and pay fair rates with no lock-in contracts. At agencies, tutor profiles are often hidden, pricing is fixed (typically from $85/hr), and tutors may only keep 35–60% of what you pay.
On Learnmate, you get:
Learnmate tutors cover 110+ subjects across every major Australian curriculum, from ELC and primary school through to Year 12 and beyond. Supported curricula include VCE, HSC, IB, QCE, WACE, SACE and TCE.

Both — tutors on Learnmate are available online and in-person across Australia. Whether you're in a metropolitan CBD or a regional area, you can find a tutor who suits your needs.
Individual tutors choose whether they offer online lessons, in-person lessons, or both. Use Learnmate's location filter to find in-person tutors near you, or search for online tutors to access the full range of tutors Australia-wide. The availability of in-person tutoring depends on your location and specific subject.
Our tutors have extensive experience teaching online and can be just as effective as in-person — research and our own data confirm that online tutoring delivers comparable results.
Yes. All tutors must meet strict minimum qualification standards before being approved to list on Learnmate, and all tutors working with students under 18 are required to hold a current Working with Children Check.
Our tutor community includes:
Learnmate reviews all applications to verify relevant experience and qualifications. You can also use the "Qualified Teacher" and "Special Needs Experience" filters when searching. We recommend reviewing your tutor's profile thoroughly and, if they don't have the "WWCC" badge on their profile, verifying their Working with Children Check before engaging them for students under 18.
Yes. Learnmate offers a 100% Good Fit Guarantee with no lock-in contracts or fixed terms — you can switch tutors anytime or pause lessons without penalty. Many tutors also offer a free first lesson or discounted trial; check individual tutor profiles for their policies.
There's no minimum number of lessons to purchase and no commitment beyond each individual session. If your tutor isn't the right fit, simply search for a new one or post a job on the Jobs Board to find a better match.
Research and our data show that online tutoring can be equally effective as in-person sessions. Tutors on Learnmate have spent years mastering online teaching tools and techniques, delivering personalised lessons that match the quality of face-to-face tutoring.
Online tutoring also offers practical benefits: greater flexibility with scheduling, access to a wider pool of tutors regardless of your location in Australia, no travel time and the ability to record sessions for revision. Many families find that students who may be shy in person actually engage more comfortably in an online setting.
Learnmate is a cashless platform — payment is automatically processed from your linked credit or debit card 24 hours after each lesson. You'll be prompted to add a card when you sign up. Cash payments and direct transfers are not accepted.
Learnmate uses Stripe, one of the world's most trusted payment providers (also used by Airbnb, Amazon, Shopify and Zoom), to securely process and store payment information. Learnmate does not store or have visibility over your payment details.
There are two ways to get started. You can click "Contact tutor" on any tutor's profile to message them directly — discuss your requirements, ask about their experience and availability, and if you'd like to proceed, ask them to schedule lessons. Alternatively, click "Request lesson" on a tutor's profile to submit your preferred day, time and tutoring requirements.
Once your tutor schedules a lesson, you'll receive a notification and it will appear in your Learnmate calendar. If you're looking for in-person lessons, use the location filter to find tutors in your area. For your first lesson, we recommend starting online to increase scheduling flexibility.
Research from Evidence for Learning shows that one-to-one tuition delivers an average of five additional months of academic progress — with primary school students benefiting even more (+6 months) compared to secondary students (+4 months).
For optimum results, the evidence recommends:
The research also found that tutoring works best when it's additional to and explicitly linked with normal classroom lessons — so we recommend discussing your child's schoolwork with their tutor so sessions can be tailored accordingly. Beyond academic progress, studies have also found that one-to-one tutoring benefits students' confidence, motivation and emotional wellbeing.
Starting tutoring in primary school can be particularly impactful — the evidence shows younger students gain the most from personalised support, building strong foundations that carry through to secondary school and beyond.
Research from Evidence for Learning found that one-to-one tuition provides an average of five additional months of academic progress. The impact is even greater for primary school students (+6 months), students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and those with low prior attainment.
For Year 11 and 12 students, our own research shows that 70% of students who achieve ATARs of 99+ engage one or more tutors. Learnmate has the largest network of senior secondary tutors in Australia, including 99+ ATAR achievers, perfect study scorers, Premier's Award recipients and qualified teachers — covering VCE, HSC, IB, QCE, WACE, SACE and TCE subjects.
The evidence is clear at every level: whether your child is in primary school building foundational skills or in Year 12 chasing a top ATAR, personalised tutoring accelerates progress. Studies also show that online tutoring delivers broadly similar results to in-person, so location is no barrier to getting started.
