Year 11 opens with biological and lifespan psychology, taking in the nervous system, neurons and neural transmission, brain structure and imaging techniques, then lifespan development, neural plasticity in adolescence, and attachment research. It then moves to attitudes, stereotypes and social influence, covering cognitive dissonance, attribution theory, social identity theory, prejudice and discrimination, and the classic obedience and conformity studies. Year 12 covers memory and learning, then motivation, wellbeing and health, including stress models, sleep and coping strategies.
WACE Psychology expects students to name researchers and give dates, and examiner reports note candidates who supplied the theorist but not the year. It reads like a technicality and behaves like a mark. The course draws on a defined body of research from Pavlov and Skinner through Bandura, Milgram, Asch and Ainsworth, and a student who can attach the right name and year to the right finding is protecting marks that are otherwise easy to lose under exam pressure.
Human Biology is the natural companion in Western Australia, sharing the nervous system and a good deal of the research methodology. Biology overlaps similarly. English matters for the extended answer section, which is marked on how an argument is constructed as well as what it contains. Health Studies covers wellbeing from a different direction.
