FIND A TUTOR

Find a QCE Psychology tutor who knows the assessment

Three internal assessments, then an exam worth half the result

QCE Psychology is assessed in a way that rewards method as much as memory. Students who know the content still lose marks when an experiment is designed so narrowly that it produces too little data to analyse, when a research question is not tied closely enough to the subject matter, or when terminology drifts between sections of the same task. Subject reports return to these points year after year. A tutor on Learnmate works on the task in front of the student rather than reteaching a unit that is already understood.

The structure sets the priorities. Three internal assessments carry half the subject result: a data test on unseen material, a student experiment, and a research investigation responding to a claim. The external examination carries the other half. That balance means marks are won across the year rather than in November, and it means assessment technique matters as much as content knowledge. Families pick the tutor themselves from what the profiles show. Payments are processed automatically by Learnmate after each lesson, with no direct payment to the tutor required. For other Queensland subjects, the QCE Tutors page lists tutors across the certificate.

ABOUT US

How Learnmate works

Profiles, reviews and rates in the open

Learnmate is Australia's leading online tutoring marketplace. Instead of assigning a tutor, Learnmate lets a family see who is available and choose. Every profile carries qualifications, subjects taught, hourly rate and reviews written by students who have already had lessons, so the choice is made on what is visible rather than on a coordinator's recommendation.

Nothing is bundled. There are no intake interviews, no packages and no lock-in contracts, and most tutors offer a first lesson free so a student can test the fit first. Payments are processed automatically after each lesson. Tutors set their own rates and Psychology lessons average $55/hr, which sits below the platform average across subjects.

WHY LEARNMATE

Why Learnmate

Find your match and unlock your mind with affordable, personalised, expert tutoring.
Tutors who mark this assessment themselves

Internal assessment is marked at the school, so knowing how that works in practice rather than in theory is hard to get any other way. Profiles on Learnmate name the tutors who teach the senior course now, so a student can find one without asking around.

Built around the assessment, not just the content

Half the result comes from three internal assessments before the exam. Tutors work on the data test, the student experiment and the research investigation as tasks with their own technique, rather than treating them as content revision.

One tutor for Psychology and Biology

Psychology and Biology share research methods and a good deal of biological content. Several tutors here teach both, so a student taking two sciences can work with one person and let the methods work carry across.

Who teaches QCE Psychology on Learnmate

A practising senior teacher and psychology graduates

QCE Psychology tutors on Learnmate include a qualified teacher currently teaching Years 11 and 12 Psychology and Biology with a Biomedical Science background, and a registered teacher of more than 25 years who also holds a psychology degree. Alongside them are psychology students at Queensland universities, including a fifth year Law and Psychology student who has taught over 100 students across six years.

Between them they cover the whole subject and the assessment around it, from the data test through to the research investigation, and several teach Biology and English as well. That matters in Queensland, where Psychology often sits beside Biology in a science heavy timetable. For other subjects, the QCE Tutors page lists tutors across the certificate, and Psychology Tutors covers students on other curricula.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much does a QCE Psychology tutor cost in Brisbane?
Psychology lessons average $55/hr on Learnmate, and tutors in Brisbane sit within that range. Tutors set their own rates according to experience and qualifications, so a practising teacher and a recent graduate will price differently. Most offer a first lesson free, payments are processed automatically by Learnmate after each lesson with no direct payment to the tutor required, and there is nothing to sign.
Can a tutor help with the student experiment?
Yes, and it is one of the most useful places to get help. Subject reports repeatedly note experiments designed so that too little data is generated for meaningful analysis, and methods that do not align with the processing that follows. Those problems are cheap to fix at the planning stage and expensive to fix afterwards. A tutor can pressure test a design before a student commits to running it.
What is the data test and how should students prepare?
The data test presents unseen qualitative or quantitative data drawn from work done in Unit 3 and asks students to interpret it under time pressure, with short written responses and permitted calculations. Preparation is mostly practice rather than revision: working through unfamiliar datasets until reading them quickly becomes routine. Tutors can supply that practice and show where marks are lost in the wording of an interpretation.
Can a tutor help with the research investigation?
Yes. The research investigation asks a student to respond to a claim using research, and the difficulties are consistent: research questions that are not specific enough to the subject matter, terminology that shifts between sections, and conclusions that never return to the original claim. Working with a tutor early, while the question is still being framed, tends to matter more than help with the writing itself.
Are lessons available outside Brisbane?
Yes. Tutors on Learnmate teach online across Queensland, which matters well beyond Brisbane. Students on the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and in regional centres can work with a tutor who teaches the QCE syllabus rather than whoever happens to be nearby. In person lessons are available in Brisbane, and many tutors offer both so a family can start one way and switch.
Does Psychology count towards the QCE and an ATAR?
Psychology is a General subject, so it contributes up to four credits towards the twenty credits needed for the QCE and counts towards an ATAR calculated by QTAC. ATAR eligibility generally requires five General subjects, or four plus an Applied subject or a Certificate III, along with satisfactory completion of an English subject. Psychology is a common choice within that mix.

I was fortunate enough to get to know Maria this year, through receiving Psychology and Biology tutoring from her for my final year of school. She is an insightful, very knowledgable tutor, who delivered the material to suit my level of understanding, ensuring we covered the outline in the current VCE study designs. The Learnmate platform was also very easy to use, helping our tutoring sessions run smoothly!

We have been trying to search for a maths tutor for our boys for some time, but haven’t quite found the right tutor until we came across Jie through Learnmate. Jie is a very competent, well organised, patient and a promptual person with a very positive attitude. Our boys are now also taking up Science lessons with Jie. We highly recommend Jie.

I really like how you introduce the topics broadly speaking initially, like discussing the real life applications to let us understand how it works in the real world which will help us visualise it as well. I also really like how you go in great detail explaining everything, and also doing many exam questions in every lesson. The questions were very relevant and have varying difficulties which help improve my abilities over time. Your explanations were also really really good. I never understood volumetric analysis in year 11 and initially in year 12 and I went through 2 chemistry tutors and also 3 school teachers over the course of a year and a half but you managed to teach me and let me fully understand and comprehend it in a matter of 20 minutes. I was seriously impressed.

Inside QCE Psychology

Units, internal and external assessment, related subjects and where tutors teach

What the four units cover

Unit 1 looks at individual development, taking in the role of the brain, cognitive development, and consciousness, attention and sleep. Unit 2 turns to individual behaviour through intelligence, diagnosis, psychological disorders and their treatment, and emotion and motivation. Unit 3 covers individual thinking, with brain function, sensation and perception, memory and learning. Unit 4 addresses the influence of others across social psychology, interpersonal processes, attitudes and cross cultural psychology. Units 3 and 4 are the pair that count towards the result.

How the assessment is weighted

Four assessments determine the subject result. The data test is worth ten per cent and asks students to interpret unseen data drawn from Unit 3. The student experiment is worth twenty per cent and requires an experiment of the student's own design based on Unit 3 subject matter. The research investigation is worth twenty per cent and responds to a claim using Unit 4 material. The external examination is worth fifty per cent and combines multiple choice with short response across two papers.

Subjects that reinforce QCE Psychology

Biology is the closest relative, sharing the nervous system, the brain and, more importantly, the experimental method that both subjects assess. Students taking both often find that work on research design counts twice. English matters more than students expect, because the research investigation and the extended responses in the examination are marked partly on how clearly an argument is built. Several tutors on Learnmate teach Psychology alongside Biology and English.

Where QCE Psychology tutors teach

Tutors on Learnmate teach QCE Psychology online across Queensland and in person in Brisbane. Online lessons matter here more than in smaller states, because Queensland students are spread from Cairns to the Gold Coast and a student in a regional centre should not be limited to tutors within driving distance. Queensland families should also note that Psychology tutoring on Learnmate covers the QCAA syllabus specifically, not a generic national version of the subject.
