VCE English Language spans four units across Year 11 and Year 12. Units 1 and 2 introduce the linguistic subsystems and language variation, exploring how Australians use English across formal and informal contexts, how language changes over time, and how different social groups use language to construct identity. Units 3 and 4 extend into a deeper study of language in use — analysing spoken and written texts using the metalanguage framework, examining language acquisition, exploring Australian English as a distinct variety, and engaging with contemporary language debates. The study design is set by VCAA and assessed through school-based SACs and a final exam.
The end-of-year exam is divided into two sections. Section A requires students to analyse one or two unseen texts using the linguistic framework — identifying features across the subsystems, explaining their function and commenting on register and context. Section B is an analytical essay responding to a contemporary language issue or debate. Both sections reward students who can deploy metalanguage precisely and construct well-structured analytical arguments.
