Learnmate also connects students with tutors for VCE English, VCE Literature and VCE EAL/D across the full English suite.

VCE English Language is unlike any other subject in the VCE English suite. Rather than interpreting texts or constructing arguments about literature, students are asked to analyse how language actually works — applying a precise linguistic framework across phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse to unseen written and spoken texts under exam conditions.
The challenge is building a confident command of metalanguage while developing the analytical fluency to deploy it accurately in timed responses. A tutor on Learnmate who has achieved a high study score in English Language or holds a linguistics qualification identifies exactly where a student's subsystem knowledge is breaking down, builds their framework systematically across Units 1–4, and prepares them for both the SAC formats their school uses and the final exam.
VCE English Language tutors on Learnmate include graduates who achieved study scores of 40 and above in the subject itself, alongside linguistics degree holders and qualified teachers with VCAA curriculum experience. The network spans recent high-achieving graduates with strong subject familiarity and postgraduate educators with specialist expertise in linguistics, TESOL and secondary English teaching.
Learnmate connects you directly with the tutor — read their profile, check their credentials, review student feedback and message them before booking. Payments are processed automatically by Learnmate after each lesson, with no cash or direct payment to the tutor required. Most tutors are available to start within 24–48 hours.

The average hourly rate on Learnmate was $64 in 2025 — significantly more affordable than tutoring agencies. Tutors set their own rates, so students can find the right fit for their subject and budget. Payments are handled automatically by Learnmate after each lesson, with no agency fees or lock-in contracts.
Every VCE English Language student has a different combination of SACs, metalanguage gaps and exam pressure points. Tutors on Learnmate tailor each session to your specific study design units, your current SAC schedule and your Section A and B weaknesses — online or in person, on a timetable that fits Year 12.

Targeted support for every stage of your VCE English Language journey — from Unit 1 subsystems to the final exam.
VCE English Language spans four units across Year 11 and Year 12. Units 1 and 2 introduce the linguistic subsystems and language variation, exploring how Australians use English across formal and informal contexts, how language changes over time, and how different social groups use language to construct identity. Units 3 and 4 extend into a deeper study of language in use — analysing spoken and written texts using the metalanguage framework, examining language acquisition, exploring Australian English as a distinct variety, and engaging with contemporary language debates. The study design is set by VCAA and assessed through school-based SACs and a final exam.
The end-of-year exam is divided into two sections. Section A requires students to analyse one or two unseen texts using the linguistic framework — identifying features across the subsystems, explaining their function and commenting on register and context. Section B is an analytical essay responding to a contemporary language issue or debate. Both sections reward students who can deploy metalanguage precisely and construct well-structured analytical arguments. Tutors on Learnmate provide practice with both formats, offering timed conditions and detailed written feedback.
VCE English Language is one of four English-group subjects in the VCE. Students may also study VCE English, VCE Literature and VCE EAL. Many students studying English Language are also enrolled in VCE English or VCE Literature, and several tutors on Learnmate teach across multiple English subjects.
