Topics, assessment weightings, the electronic exam and where tutors teach
Stage 1 Psychology, taken in Year 11 as either a ten or twenty credit subject, draws its topics from cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, lifespan psychology, emotion, psychological wellbeing and psychology in context, with a negotiated topic available, alongside science inquiry skills. Stage 2, taken in Year 12 as a twenty credit subject, covers five topics: psychology of the individual, psychological health and wellbeing, organisational psychology, social influence, and the psychology of learning. Stage 1 is assessed entirely at school.
Three assessment types make up the Stage 2 result. The investigations folio carries thirty per cent and holds both a psychological investigation and a science as a human endeavour investigation. Skills and applications tasks carry forty per cent. The external examination carries the remaining thirty per cent and runs electronically for 130 minutes. Grades are awarded from A plus to E minus against published performance standards, with school assessment moderated across schools.
Biology is the closest neighbour, sharing the nervous system, the brain and the science inquiry skills that both subjects assess. Students taking both usually find investigation work transfers directly. English strengthens the extended writing that the investigations folio and examination both reward. Health and wellbeing subjects overlap with psychological health and wellbeing at Stage 2.
