The internal assessment is not the task it used to be

IB Psychology asks students to hold three approaches to behaviour in mind at once and apply them to material they have never seen. Marks are lost in predictable places. Students describe studies where the command term asked them to evaluate. They treat concepts as vocabulary rather than as the frame an answer is built on. They lose ground on command terms, where the difference between describe, explain, contrast and evaluate sets the mark ceiling before a word of content is written. A tutor works on the response, not just the recall.

The bigger change is the internal assessment. Under the current guide, students write a research proposal for a study they will not run, rather than a report on an experiment they carried out. Marks now come from justifying method choices, which is unfamiliar territory for most students and for plenty of teachers. Higher Level students also face data analysis and interpretation that Standard Level does not. Tutors on Learnmate work through both. You choose the tutor yourself, book directly, and payments are processed automatically by Learnmate after each lesson, with no direct payment to the tutor required. Students taking several Diploma subjects can find tutors across them on the IB Tutors page.

ABOUT US

The Learnmate platform

Choose your own tutor, not one assigned to you

Learnmate is Australia's leading online tutoring marketplace, built around the idea that families should be able to see who is available and pick for themselves. Profiles carry Diploma scores, subject results, university study and reviews from students who have already had lessons, so the decision rests on evidence rather than a matching algorithm or an intake call.

There are no packages to buy and no lock-in contracts. Most tutors offer a first lesson free, which for IB Psychology usually means bringing a marked response along and finding out where the marks actually went. Payments are processed automatically after each lesson, and IB Psychology lessons average $55/hr.

WHY LEARNMATE

Why Learnmate

Find your match and unlock your mind with affordable, personalised, expert tutoring.
Tutors who scored 7 in Psychology HL

Several IB Psychology tutors on Learnmate hold a 7 at Higher Level and sat the Diploma recently. They remember which topics the papers keep returning to and how examiners separate a 5 from a 7.

Current on the new course guide

The internal assessment changed from a replicated experiment to a written research proposal. Tutors on Learnmate work to the guide a student is actually sitting rather than the one they studied themselves.

Built for students taking several sciences

IB Psychology rarely travels alone. Many tutors here teach Biology and Chemistry at Higher Level too, so one tutor can cover more than one subject and the research methods carry across.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much does an IB Psychology tutor cost?
IB Psychology lessons average $55/hr on Learnmate, which sits below the platform average across all subjects. Tutors set their own rates, so the range reflects experience and results rather than a fixed price. Most offer a first lesson free, payments are processed automatically by Learnmate after each lesson with no direct payment to the tutor required, and there is no package or contract to commit to.
What changed in the IB Psychology internal assessment?
Under the current course guide the internal assessment is a written research proposal for a hypothetical study, replacing the report on a replicated experiment that earlier cohorts completed. Students no longer collect data. Marks come from justifying the method chosen and designing the study convincingly, which is a different skill from writing up results. Tutors who have worked with the new task can show what a strong justification looks like.
Can a tutor help with an Extended Essay in Psychology?
Yes. The Extended Essay in Psychology is a common choice and a common source of stress, because a weak research question makes every later stage harder. Tutors on Learnmate include a graduate awarded an A for an Extended Essay in Psychology. Support usually focuses on narrowing the question, choosing studies that can actually sustain an argument, and structuring the essay so the evaluation carries real weight.
Do tutors cover both Standard Level and Higher Level?
Yes. Standard Level and Higher Level share the same approaches to behaviour and the same internal assessment, so much of the work overlaps. Higher Level adds extension material and a data analysis component that Standard Level students do not sit. Tutor profiles state which level a tutor has taken and taught, and several on Learnmate completed Psychology at Higher Level themselves.
How do IB Psychology results convert to an ATAR in Australia?
Australian tertiary admissions centres convert a Diploma result into an ATAR equivalent using an agreed method, so a Diploma student competes for places alongside state curriculum students. The conversion is generous at the top of the scale. Because Psychology is one of six subjects contributing to the total, a lift of one grade moves the overall result, which is why targeted work on a single subject is worthwhile.
When should an IB Psychology student start tutoring?
Earlier than most families expect, because the internal assessment falls in the middle of the programme rather than at the end. A student who arrives at the proposal without having practised justifying method choices loses marks that are difficult to recover later. Starting in the first year of the Diploma also spreads the work, which matters when Psychology sits alongside five other subjects and the Extended Essay.

Louisa is an outstanding tutor in Chemistry. I've had Louisa as my tutor for two months now and I can confidently say that she provides excellent academic support to her students. Although I am an IB student and she completed the QCE, Louisa still achieves to precisely teach me the difficult concepts of Chemistry and continually aspires to learn more about the particular IB standards.

Sai has always been able to explain tough concepts in a way that is easy for me to understand and is able to look at a question I've sent last minute and help me understand it with no problem. He has helped me go from a band 5 in IB Maths and Physics to a band 7 in Maths and a band 6 in Physics.

Vivien was my IB English Literature tutor for the past two years in Yr 11 and 12. She is absolutely amazing and is always ready to go out of her way to come up with more resources for practice writing tasks, oral commentaries/presentations & works in translations essays. Discussions are student driven and she will then add her input as to how she can make the said task better. She also provides handy tips to make the best use of time regarding exam revisions. Also, she is very accommodative as she pretty much sets up each class tailored to the student. Personally, I was scoring only 4s (out of 7) at the start of year 11 but obtained a high 6 (out of 7) in my year 12 IB final exam. This would not have been possible without Vivien’s excellent tutoring style and support. Importantly, apart from being just a tutor – she’s like a friend as she knows how intense year 12 can get sometimes and is always ready to provide advice and support to boost your confidence! Thank you so much Vivien!

My son just did his first session on IB essay writing with Rhaihana. When he finished, he was quick to tell me how knowledgeable and lovely she is and how he was feeling much more confident about a forthcoming writing task after just one hour. I am looking forward to his skills in essay writing growing as he does more sessions, as well as his enthusiasm for essay writing - which he currently dreads.

Kate is an incredibly efficient and compassionate english tutor. She has guided my development in several key areas including a clear formation of ideas and accurate grammar in an enjoyable manner. Her abundant resources and flexibility with her class structure has made my year 12 IB Literature experience significantly easier to manage. The most valuable part of my lessons with Kate is the individual component of her teaching structure. She evokes me to express my analysis of each text and asks insightful, thought provoking questions before she provides her own insight which is very helpful.

MORE INFO

Inside the IB Psychology course

Course structure, assessment, related Diploma subjects and where tutors teach

How the course is built

IB Psychology is organised around three approaches to understanding behaviour, biological, cognitive and sociocultural, studied alongside research methodology. Around that core sit four contexts covering health and wellbeing, human development, human relationships, and learning and cognition, which are now studied by every student rather than chosen as options. Six concepts, among them bias, causality and measurement, run through the whole course and shape how answers are expected to be framed. Higher Level students take additional material on culture, motivation and technology, plus data analysis.

How students are assessed

Assessment combines the internal assessment with written papers. The internal assessment is a research proposal for a hypothetical study, capped at 2,200 words and marked against four criteria covering introduction, methodology, data collection and discussion. Paper 1 mixes short answer and applied scenario questions with a concept based extended response. Paper 2 covers work done in class practicals and asks students to evaluate an unseen study. Higher Level students also sit a source based data analysis paper with a resource booklet.

Diploma subjects that sit well beside Psychology

Psychology shares more ground with Biology than students expect, particularly the nervous system, the brain and experimental design, so work in one subject tends to raise the other. Sports, Exercise and Health Science overlaps on motivation and wellbeing. English builds the extended response skills that Paper 1 rewards. Several tutors on Learnmate teach these subjects alongside Psychology, which makes it practical to work on more than one with the same person rather than assembling a panel.

Where IB Psychology tutors teach

Around 200 IB World Schools operate in Australia, with Diploma programmes concentrated in the capital cities but spread well beyond them. Because Diploma cohorts at any one school are small, a student looking for a tutor who took Psychology at Higher Level is unlikely to find one locally. Tutors on Learnmate teach online across every state and territory, and also in person in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.
