How do I find a tutor?

Search for a tutor(s) by using Learnmate’s search bar here. Input your school level, curriculum and the subjects you’re looking for a tutor in.

Once you’ve found a tutor, click ‘Contact Tutor’ and follow the prompts to either contact them immediately or save them to contact later (i.e. if you want to continue searching for other tutors to contact).

To get in contact with your preferred tutor(s), simply register for a free account on Learnmate and you’ll receive access to their details. You can then speak to your preferred tutor(s) about your tutoring needs, their style of tutoring, availability and locations and, assuming they’re a match, schedule your lesson.

For a limited time, Learnmate is offering all new students a free $20 credit to use in their first paid lesson on Learnmate!

What do tutors need to do to be listed on Learnmate?

Learnmate tutors must meet certain qualification requirements to be listed, including having achieved a minimum ATAR of 85, having obtained a relevant teaching qualification or have equivalent experience tutoring or in a relevant field. Most of our tutors have achieved in excess of these hurdles and/or are highly experienced teachers.

Tutors are also provided the opportunity to verify their Working with Children Check with Learnmate and may complete professional tutor training through Learnmate to be best prepared to provide effective tutoring. Lookout for ‘WWCC’ and ‘ATA Trained’ badges on tutor profiles, which show when a tutor has completed these steps.

How often and how long should lessons be?

The answer will depend on the any one student’s specific needs, current level and goals.

Evidence for Learning (2020) believe that optimum impact is achieved in one-to-one tutoring where short (roughly 30 minute) regular lessons are completed 3-5 times per week over a set period of time. Our data suggests this is most suitable for younger and primary school tuition, whereas Year 11-12 tuition tends to be longer 1-1.5 hours per lesson 1-2 times per week.

How does Learnmate provide a safe and supportive environment for its students?

We pride ourselves on delivering the best outcomes for our students and providing a safe environment for them to learn. This means ensuring that the quality of the service our tutors provide meets your expectations and that we provide a safe and supportive environment for everyone in the Learnmate community. Learnmate has set up partnerships with key independent providers to ensure we meet and exceed recognised standards in the tutoring industry.

For its work in the industry, Learnmate has been recognised and awarded for its commitment to its students and tutors. Learn more here.

Do your tutors offer in-person or online tutoring?

Generally speaking, both! Our tutors are located all across Australia. There’s a good chance there is a quality tutor available to help you in or near your area but if not, most of our tutors now offer 1:1 tutoring and group tutoring online (via our online learning platform).

Whether you’re in a metropolitan CBD, living in a remote location or restricted for one reason or another from in-person tutoring, Learnmate will have a tutor for you.

How do I organise a lesson with my tutor?

Once you have signed up with Learnmate, you will receive your tutor’s contact details so you can discuss your tutoring requirements and organise a time and place for your first lesson.

Your tutor will schedule your lessons in Learnmate’s calendar, which can be found in your online account. Your online account also allows you to:

  • view lesson notes and feedback left by your tutor for particular lessons;
  • view past lessons and payments;
  • request prepaid packages for discounted lessons; and
  • update your contact and payment information.
How do I pay for my lesson?

All lessons are scheduled and paid for through Learnmate.

Your credit or debit card will be automatically charged after a lesson is marked as completed by your tutor and you will receive a confirmation email when payment has been processed.

Lessons can be paid for by Visa, Mastercard and AMEX and are processed securely and safely through Stripe, one of the world’s most trusted and secure online payment processors.

As per our Terms & Conditions, cash and direct transfer to tutors are not accepted payment methods. See our Terms & Conditions for more information around payment processes on Learnmate.

As your ‘Learnmate’, our tutors want to see you become your best self, like they would any of their mates. Our tutors encourage independence and continuous academic improvement so that students can approach and complete their assessments with confidence. We believe it’s important that the student and tutor have a good social rapport and tutoring is not solely focused on study; this is what fosters a comfortable learning environment in which the student feels safe and supported and can ask the tutor questions without hesitation.

Our tutors are vetted and trained through our comprehensive online training course, ensuring we create and maintain a community of quality, reliable and trustworthy tutors. You can learn more about this process here.
