Rates are set by each tutor and start from $30/hr. A university student tutoring first year maths sits at the lower end, a registered teacher with a decade in Illawarra classrooms at the upper. Most give a first lesson free, nothing is locked in for a term, and payment runs automatically after each lesson.
Many will. Common destinations are Figtree, Fairy Meadow, Corrimal, Keiraville, Gwynneville and Unanderra, with some travelling south to Dapto and Shellharbour or north along the coast to Thirroul. Profiles state which suburbs a tutor covers and whether they teach in person, online or both, so the travel question is settled before a first lesson is booked.
Tutors state the courses they have taught and their results in them. English and Mathematics changed syllabus in 2026, with the first examination in 2027, and the sciences follow a year later, so asking which version a tutor has taught is worth doing. Several tutors are current or recent students of the courses themselves.
Both, and the mix is the point. The University of Wollongong supplies a steady local pool, particularly in the sciences, engineering and mathematics, and that sits alongside teachers working in Illawarra schools. Anything uncommon is covered online by tutors elsewhere in NSW, so the choice is never limited to who happens to live nearby.
Mathematics and the sciences are the deepest, helped by the university, followed by English including Advanced and the Extension courses. Business studies, economics and the humanities are covered, and primary literacy and numeracy support is available across the Illawarra. Profiles list every course a tutor teaches and what they achieved in each of them.
For most subjects, yes, and in the Illawarra it is often the only way to reach a specialist. A shared whiteboard shows working line by line and screen sharing handles past papers. It also removes the escarpment and the highway from the equation, which for families outside the city is usually the real constraint.
The University of Wollongong puts postgraduates and senior undergraduates in the city year round, many of them tutoring in the subject they are studying. Profiles say what a tutor is studying and what they scored, so a student can judge the fit rather than take it on trust.
Tutors travel to Figtree, Fairy Meadow, Corrimal, Unanderra and Dapto, and down the coast to Shellharbour. Where nobody local teaches a course, the same lesson runs online, which is how most students north of Thirroul and west of the escarpment end up working.
Nothing is paid up front for a term. Most tutors give the first lesson free, a family can change tutors or stop after a fortnight, and payment is handled automatically after each lesson rather than invoiced.
