Years 7–12 science tutoring — from general science foundations to senior secondary specialisation

Science tutoring in Australia covers two distinct phases with different needs. For students in Years 7 to 10, science is taught as an integrated subject under the Australian Curriculum — covering Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences within a single strand. Tutors at this level help students build the conceptual foundations — cells, atoms, forces, ecosystems — and develop the scientific reasoning and data skills that determine which senior secondary science subjects they can access. For students in Years 11 and 12, science splits into separate disciplines: students choose one or more of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, each with its own syllabus, assessment structure and marking expectations in their state’s curriculum.

Choosing the right tutor at senior secondary level depends on the specific discipline and curriculum. A VCE Chemistry student and an HSC Chemistry student study similar content but are assessed differently — tutors who have studied the same curriculum understand the specific assessment nuances. Browse Biology tutors, Chemistry tutors and Physics tutors for subject-specific tutor listings, or browse all science tutors here if your child is still in Years 7–10 and working across the integrated curriculum. Tutors are available online across Australia or in-person across all major cities.

ABOUT US

Why Australian Families Choose Learnmate for Science Tutoring

Australia’s leading tutoring marketplace — Biology, Chemistry and Physics specialists nationwide

Learnmate is Australia’s leading online tutoring marketplace, connecting students with verified science tutors across Biology, Chemistry and Physics at every year level. For Years 7 to 10 students, Learnmate provides access to tutors who can strengthen conceptual foundations across the integrated Australian Curriculum science strand. For senior secondary students in Years 11 and 12, the network includes tutors who have studied the same state curriculum — VCE, HSC, WACE, SACE, QCE or IB — and who understand the specific assessment structure and marking expectations their examiners apply. All tutors are verified before listing, and payments are processed automatically after each lesson.

Private one-on-one science tutoring consistently outperforms group tutoring centres at senior secondary level because it targets the specific concept, experiment or exam question type that is limiting a student’s grade — not a standardised programme moving at group pace. From $30/hr, Learnmate connects students directly with the right specialist without agency fees, intake calls or lock-in contracts.

What our Science Students Say About Learnmate

AlyshaReviews rating

I was fortunate enough to get to know Maria this year, through receiving Psychology and Biology tutoring from her for my final year of school. She is an insightful, very knowledgable tutor, who delivered the material to suit my level of understanding, ensuring we covered the outline in the current VCE study designs. The Learnmate platform was also very easy to use, helping our tutoring sessions run smoothly!

ApsaraReviews rating

Cassandra is an excellent teacher, very knowledgeable, resourceful and kind. She helped my daughter to understand concepts in Biology and guided in revision by doing VCE exam questions from the beginning.

MichelleReviews rating

Rochelle has been amazing with her tutoring in VCE Biology. My daughter has so much more confidence going into her SACs. Rochelle provides excellent feedback and communication. Highly recommend Rochelle!

LanReviews rating

We have been trying to search for a maths tutor for our boys for some time, but haven’t quite found the right tutor until we came across Jie through Learnmate. Jie is a very competent, well organised, patient and a promptual person with a very positive attitude. Our boys are now also taking up Science lessons with Jie. We highly recommend Jie.

OliverReviews rating

Shamini helped me through VCE Units 3/4 Physics and Methods. She always ensured I felt comfortable asking any questions and was very adaptable to whether I wanted to go through Physics or Methods work each session. I would highly recommend Shamini.

ChloeReviews rating

I really like how you introduce the topics broadly speaking initially, like discussing the real life applications to let us understand how it works in the real world which will help us visualise it as well. I also really like how you go in great detail explaining everything, and also doing many exam questions in every lesson. The questions were very relevant and have varying difficulties which help improve my abilities over time. Your explanations were also really really good. I never understood volumetric analysis in year 11 and initially in year 12 and I went through 2 chemistry tutors and also 3 school teachers over the course of a year and a half but you managed to teach me and let me fully understand and comprehend it in a matter of 20 minutes. I was seriously impressed.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions

How much do science tutors charge in Australia?
Tutors on Learnmate set their own hourly rates, displayed on each profile before you reach out. The platform-wide average was $65 per hour in 2025 for senior secondary science tutoring, with Chemistry tutors averaging slightly higher at around $82/hr due to demand. Primary and junior secondary science tutoring typically ranges from $44 to $59 per hour. Payments are processed automatically by Learnmate after each lesson — no cash or direct payment required. Many tutors offer a first lesson free.
Should my child see a general science tutor or a specialist in Biology, Chemistry or Physics?
For students in Years 7 to 10, a tutor who covers integrated science is appropriate — at this level, the Australian Curriculum treats Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences as a single strand. For Year 11 and 12 students, a subject specialist is almost always better. Senior secondary Biology, Chemistry and Physics are distinct disciplines with separate syllabuses, assessment structures and exam formats in each state. A tutor who has studied and achieved highly in the specific subject your child is sitting will understand the marking criteria at a level a generalist cannot.
What year levels do science tutors on Learnmate cover?
Tutors on Learnmate cover all year levels from primary school through to Year 12 and beyond. For primary school students, tutors cover science foundations aligned to the Australian Curriculum. For Years 7 to 10, tutors work through the integrated science strand. For Years 11 and 12, tutors specialise in Biology, Chemistry and Physics across VCE, HSC, WACE, SACE, QCE and IB. Year level and subject coverage are listed on each tutor’s profile so you can compare before reaching out.
Can I find a science tutor online or do they need to come in person?
Both options are available on Learnmate. Online sessions are delivered via video call using Zoom, Google Meet or Learnmate’s sponsored platform, Lessonspace — with screen sharing and virtual whiteboards particularly well-suited to working through science diagrams, equations and data analysis. Many tutors also offer in-person sessions across all major Australian cities. Tutor profiles indicate delivery preferences and many offer both formats, with sessions scheduled directly with the tutor at a time that suits your family.
How do I know if a science tutor knows my child’s curriculum?
Each tutor’s profile on Learnmate lists the curricula they teach — including VCE, HSC, WACE, SACE, QCE and IB — alongside the specific subjects and year levels they cover. Tutors who have sat senior secondary science examinations in their own state understand the specific assessment format, command terms and marking criteria of that curriculum. For senior secondary students, filtering by curriculum and subject when browsing tutors gives the most relevant results.
How can I tell if science tutoring is working for my child?

Progress often shows through clearer understanding of concepts, improved class participation, stronger homework performance and increased confidence. Tutors provide real-time feedback, track learning milestones and adjust lesson plans as needed. Parents also commonly notice reduced stress around tests and better organisational habits as tutoring continues.
