READ MORELiteracy covers reading, writing, spelling and comprehension. Tutors on Learnmate work across all four, from Kindergarten through to Year 10, online or in person.

Literacy covers reading, writing, spelling and comprehension as one connected skill.
Tutors work from Kindergarten to Year 10, including students below year level.
Decoding and comprehension are different problems and need different work.
Some tutors state experience with dyslexia and structured literacy approaches.
Reading and writing each have their own tutors on Learnmate.

Three things usually bring a family here. A teacher's comment that a child is below the expected level. A child who reads aloud fluently and remembers none of it. Or spelling and writing that have not moved in a year while everything else has. Profiles on Learnmate are open to browse, so you can compare what each tutor has worked on and which year levels they teach before making contact.
Literacy is not assessed as a subject, so there is no report mark to work back from and most families are going on a comment rather than a number. A tutor's first job is usually to work out which of the four skills has stalled. Most give a first lesson free, there are no lock-in contracts, and payment is processed automatically after each lesson. For reading specifically, the reading tutors page is the better starting point.
Learnmate is Australia's leading online tutoring marketplace, and its literacy network spans reading, writing, spelling and comprehension from Kindergarten to Year 10, including students working below year level.
Profiles are open to browse, so a family can compare experience, year levels and rates before making contact. There are no intake calls and no lock-in period, most tutors give a first lesson free, and payment is handled automatically after each lesson.

Reading, writing, spelling and comprehension fail separately and a child can be strong at some and weak at others. A tutor who treats them as one thing will spend the hour on whichever is easiest to teach. Profiles say what each tutor actually works on.
A student who reaches Year 7 without secure literacy struggles in every subject, not only English. Most families come later than they meant to. Tutors here work across the full Kindergarten to Year 10 range rather than stopping at primary.
Nothing is paid up front for a term and there is no minimum commitment. Most tutors give the first lesson free, a family can change tutors at any point, and payment is processed automatically after each lesson.

Literacy tutors on Learnmate include postgraduates holding a Master of Education, a Master of Education in Teacher Librarianship and a Master of Writing, alongside registered primary and secondary teachers with twenty-five and thirty years in Australian classrooms, and a departmental Small Group Tuition coordinator who leads literacy and numeracy intervention programmes.
Below that sit NESA accredited teachers, early childhood and primary graduates from the University of Newcastle and Australian Catholic University, and university students tutoring alongside their degrees. Coverage runs from Kindergarten through to adult learners, including ESL and IELTS preparation. For a single skill, the reading tutors and writing tutors pages list tutors working specifically in each.

What literacy covers, who teaches it, and where to start
Literacy is four skills that fail independently. Decoding is turning letters into sounds. Fluency is reading at a pace that leaves attention free for meaning. Comprehension is understanding, inferring and remembering what was read. Writing is producing it in the other direction, with spelling sitting across both. A student can be secure in three and stuck in one, which is why the first session is usually diagnostic rather than instructional.
Most families cannot tell, and a school report rarely says. As a rough guide: if the difficulty shows when your child reads to you, or when they read alone and retain nothing, start with reading tutors. If it shows when they face a blank page, or when what they produce does not match how well they talk about a topic, start with writing tutors. If both, or if you are unsure, book a literacy tutor and let them work it out.
Literacy support is usually framed as a primary school service, which leaves Years 7 to 10 poorly served. A student who arrived in secondary school without secure reading will struggle in science, humanities and maths word problems, not only in English. The work at that age is different: it has to move faster, avoid materials that look childish, and account for a student who has spent years developing ways to hide the gap.
