Hello! My name is James and I am professional classical musician offering tutoring in VCE Music Performance, any high school music subjects, and AMEB Music Theory Grades 1 – 5.
I graduated from Scotch College in 2012 with an ATAR of 98.75, and completed VCE Music Performance (40+) and VCE Music Style and Composition in 2011. Since school I have been fortunate enough to study music at Monash University, The University of British Columbia (Canada), and The University of Melbourne. I graduated from a Bachelor of Music (Honours) with First Class Honours in 2017, and am completing a Master of Music (Performance) at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Alongside my Master’s degree, I am currently continuing my performance training at the Australian National Academy of Music.
I have had several years of experience teaching low brass instruments at Scotch College and Camberwell Grammar School, and really enjoy workshopping and dissecting music with my students, particularly in preparation for their AMEB exams. My approach to instrumental music involves understanding the theory, structure, and context behind the music in order to inform the student’s interpretation. I believe a strong ability to analyse, understand and talk about music can lift everyone’s ability in their performance.
Whether you are wanting to improve your listening and music language skills, receive performance feedback and advice, prepare for SACs and other tests, or want to sit your AMEB theory exams, I would love to work with you in person or online over Zoom.
