It’s important that you start revising NOW – with the exam only being less than two months away! First and foremost, you MUST know your metalanguage to do well in any section of the exam. Past examiner’s reports have stated that students’ lack of metalinguistic knowledge can be heavily revealed in the short answer and analytical commentary sections in particular, but also in the essay section too. Before you get onto the quotes list and actual practice, I would recommend you revise your metalanguage first.

But students have asked, “how do I revise the metalanguage?”. It’s not just a matter of memorisation but also fundamentally understanding what each term means and then knowing how to use it to identify language features in a text. For example, knowing the difference between sentence structures and sentence types can make a world of difference in the exam.

To achieve a complete understanding of each metalinguistic term, you’ll need to do the following for each term:

  1. Write down the actual term.
  2. Define it in your own words.
  3. Give an example in a particular context.

To help you begin this process, I have drafted a template in Word for you to fill out with each term. This should help you save time in creating your own document (who has time for formatting!?). In the template I will also start you off with a few terms to show you how it should be done – and then you can follow this pattern to fill out the rest of the document. Note: this will take some time, but if you want to do well, it MUST be done.

In addition, I have also published an online course, which in fact has the definitions list to all of the terms on the study design. If this interests you, please find the URL link below at the bottom of the article to get 25% off the online course.

Next week, I’ll be publishing my complete exam maximisation plan as well as a quotes list template to help you out with the main themes.

Dmitri 🙂
