About The LearnMate Summer Meetup

This is the perfect opportunity to learn the tips and tricks of the trade to becoming an amazing tutor. You will not be disappointed – with a focus on both professional and company development, you’ll be able to learn exactly how to become a successful tutor.

So what exactly is this ‘Summer Meetup’?

Good question! The main purposes for this meet up are:
1. Professional Development & Study Design Changes

2. Company Development

Professional Development:

  • I will aim to get some very experienced tutors to come along and provide their knowledge on how to tackle common issues in tutoring as well as how to become a better communicator, motivator and mentor.
  • I will also present based on my personal experience all of the common issues I’ve faced and how I’ve dealt with it.
  • I will also talk about my experience on how to better market yourself and develop a name/authority for yourself!
  • You will also get a chance to meet up with tutors for similar subjects (e.g. if you teach Biology you can chat to another tutor who teaches Biology) – this will provide an invaluable experience to gain insight into how other tutors conduct their lessons.

Study Design Changes:

  • Some study designs are changing slightly next year and it’s important that all tutors are on the same page regarding these changes. If you know your study design is changing, then it would be worth coming along to discuss with similar tutors these changes in your subject.
  • LearnMate will prepare documents for EACH CHANGING subject to be handed out to all tutors for discussion. This document prepared by other LearnMate tutors will highlight exactly what is changing, the key concepts and terms, and where resources can be found.
  • Study Designs that are changing slightly include: Business Management, Biology, Chemistry, English, English Literature, Physics and Psychology.

Company Development:

  • My vision is to make this Australia’s largest and to knock out some of the giants. I’d love to hear about any feedback you have about our systems, how we can improve the company processes and culture etc.
  • You’ll be able to network with similar and like-minded tutors and forge friendships. I have seen many tutors become friends with each other simply by attending our past meetups.

You’ll be provided with notes and resources on all of the tips and tricks provided during the workshop in a nice neat folder!

I’ll be providing snacks, drinks and some food, but I will aim to end at 1:30pm just in time for lunch at the place. Subway will be provided free of charge 🙂 How can you go wrong with free Subway!?

This will be held on Saturday 28th of January, as I figured if it were to be held any later then it would cause some scheduling issues with lessons as student will still be on holidays at that time. It also ensure we get a break in January, so if you’re still in Melbourne I would love to see you there. Please arrive at 10:30am and we will finish by 1:30pm in time for lunch.

If you’d like to attend, please click here. Both current and new LearnMate tutors are welcome to attend. If you’d like to bring a friend along to introduce them to the company, then by all means feel free to – please just ask me first.

I look forward to seeing you there! 🙂

This meetup is presented by Dmitri Dalla-Riva, an experienced VCE English Language tutor and workshop presenter, as well as owner of LearnMate tutoring. Dmitri attained a study score of 45 in the subject in 2012 and was Dux of Scotch College, Melbourne.

Hey guys!

It’s Dmitri here from LearnMate Tutoring. Over the past 1.5 years, LearnMate has grown from 0 to 300 tutors and part of this growth has been fuelled by my desire to better society. I believe we’re on the right path to doing really great things and I want to continue to build on this vision. Helping people – both tutors and students alike, is my mission.

I would love to take this opportunity to meet you if we haven’t met before (the perils of the virtual world), and get to know you better. If you know that you’ll be tutoring for some time and want to improve on your tutoring skills and the company, then feel free to come along 🙂

I look forward to seeing you there and getting to know you personally!

Kind Regards,

Special Guest!

I’ve got a guest speaker (will organise more in the coming weeks), who will chat to you during the meet up.

His name is Alex Bell, a really good friend of mine and the owner of (and also I believe Victoria’s BEST online course for Maths Methods!) – he will spending some time talking about his experience tutoring over the years, such as:

– How to tackle the first lesson and what to do
– Common encounters in tutoring and how to overcome them
– How to market yourself effectively
– How to communicate effectively
– And any other questions you’d like to ask him!

You can read more about Alex’s profile here (he’s super smart and really personable):

Special Guest!

In addition to Alex Bell, I’d also like to present another guest speaker below!

His name is Michael Tsai, a really good friend of mine and the owner of (and also I believe Victoria’s BEST preparatory workshop and online course for the UMAT hands down!) – he will spending some time talking about his experience tutoring over past 10 years, with a focus on relationship and rapport building.

Michael has worked closely with thousands of students in preparing for UMAT over the past nine years. Many of these students (400+ to be exact!) have gone on to gain acceptance in their dream courses of medicine or dentistry in Australia and New Zealand.

You can read more about Michael’s website and company iCanMed here:

  3. You want to learn how to market yourself better.
  4. You want to be a part of a growing company with a focus on culture.

Yes, on the day you’ll be provided with all notes in a neat booklet. All other notes will be sent digitally to you at the end of the meetup. Over the past year I have created some amazing documents and I want you to have access to all of this.

If you’re unable to attend for whatever reason (that’s okay!), I will be sure to give you access to all notes electronically. I am thinking of also recording the meetup to put up online exclusive to LearnMate tutors.

Yes! A free Subway lunch will be provided at the end of the Meetup – around 1:30pm. Make sure you advise me of any allergies or special dietary requirements so I can order you your own Subway.

Testimonials from LearnMate Tutors…

  • My student just messaged me that she was crying because of her English Sac result. I immediately prepared to console her until she dropped the bomb that she got her first ever B+!! She's only ever averaged D's and occasional C's, so she's absolutely over the moon. Just thought I'd let you know about this improvement. I'd also just like to say thank you for hiring me haha. Her excitement and joy at this amazing grade made me so so happy I can't even describe it. My hard work has paid off, and hers certainly has too. Ahh I'm so happy. This is why I tutor; to see their excitement and happiness when they improve.

  • LearnMate Tutoring has been a fantastic experience, and given me the opportunity to grow my student portfolio. It has enabled me to meet many different students from different schools, areas and abilities. With LearnMate taking care of all my advertising, and the easy session logging using the website, it is a very clean, efficient way of managing students and sessions. It's a privilege to be part of the organisation.

  • LearnMate has improved my tutoring business considerably. Along with providing new clients, the LearnMate website has aided me in organising my schedule and broadening the my online presence. The site is user-friendly and allows tutors control over where and when they work.

Nick X – Current LearnMate Tutor
  • LearnMate has been wonderful with providing training and opportunities which have helped me build my professional repertoire and extend my tutoring skills. This has been a wonderful experience and I've had the opportunity to work with bright, capable VCE students independently while receiving support from Dmitri who has been both communicative and very friendly.
