I have a PhD (D.Litt) in English and a professional post-graduate teaching qualification. As a result I am registered as a teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). During the past six years I have tutored students ranging from Year 3 to PhD, but the majority of my students have been studying VCE English in Year 11 or 12. In working with Year 11 students I have become familiar with the new Study Design for English. As a result of many years of experience in teaching and tutoring English, I have in-depth knowledge of the subject and many set texts, as well as the wide-ranging contextual knowledge needed for excellence in the teaching and study of English.
My Tutoring Approach:
Having tutored English and EAL in Melbourne for the past six years, I am familiar with both the old and new study designs which share several common features. Because I have worked with many students in this period I can adapt my tutoring methods to different levels of ability in each Area of Study. As your tutor, I will work with you to identify your needs, strengths and weaknesses and assist you in the successful completion of tasks set by your teacher as well as in preparing effectively for SACs and exams. In addition, I will give you detailed and individualised feedback on your writing and advise you on how to improve in common areas of weakness such as the structuring of essays in alignment with a given prompt. In guiding your improvement, I will be consistently patient, flexible and encouraging in helping you to meet the demands and challenges that you may encounter.
As someone deeply committed to the values that underpin the English curriculum, I will help you to see the relevance of what you are studying to your own life as a global citizen. In encouraging you to engage fully and deeply with the subject matter, I will do my utmost to ensure that you achieve a VCE result that you can be proud of.
Specifically, I am able to provide and assist students with various aspects of the new English Study Design including:
- Analytical and creative responses to texts and prompts.
- Comparative Text Responses and comparative Language Analysis.
- Writing and presentation of persuasive texts.
- How to use appropriate metalanguage in Text Response and Language Analysis.
- How to identify and collect quotes for effective use in essays.
- How to plan, draft and improve essays.
- Constructive feedback on plans and written drafts in the writing process, using email and MSWord Review and Track Changes.
Availability, Location & Cost:
I am available most weekdays and on Sundays. Depending on my other tutoring commitments, I am flexible and will do my best to fit in with your schedule.
As I have a car and driver’s licence, I am willing to travel to your home or a public library provided that it is within 20 kilometres of where I live in Montrose.
I charge $90 an hour for individual students and $90 an hour for groups of 2-4.
All lessons are now offered on Skype only as I have developed innovative tutoring methods that use digital technology.
