Hi! I’m Sophie and I graduated in 2019 from St Michaels Grammar School with an ATAR of 96.50.
I am available to tutor Maths and English for students from Grade 3 to Year 10, as well as the VCE subjects Studio Art (study score of 45) and Maths Methods (study score of 39).
For students in Years 3-10:
I know as well as anyone that English and Maths can be super frustrating during these years – you don’t like it, you’re not interested, and maybe you feel like you’re not good enough to do well. I would love to provide you with support to start feeling proud and passionate about your work, a feeling that is a prerequisite to begin to achieve higher grades. I want the focus of my tutoring sessions to be engaging students with these subjects, rather than ROTE learning rules.
I achieved grades in these subjects in the top ~10-15% of students in both Maths and English in VCE, as well as achieving band 10 scores in NAPLAN in 2016. I’m also studying Arts at the University of Melbourne, where I am average H1 grades in my English and Linguistics subjects, as well as in my Chemistry subject, which is keeping my maths skills up to date, allowing me to help improve my students’ mathematical literacy. I have had plenty of practice with essay writing through my literature and humanities background, and will certainly be able to help with things like word choice, grammar, spelling, and structure. I will also be able to provide practice questions for both subjects as well as supplying extra work that the student can do outside of our tutoring time if they’re interested 🙂
For VCE students:
I wasn’t the most natural high achiever at school, but I worked hard and consistently to achieve good grades across the board throughout VCE. I think it is this that sets me apart from a lot of other tutors, who often had a natural talent in their chosen areas and don’t have the skills that people who are struggling look for in order to catch up or get ahead.
In Methods, I am able to provide support in linking concepts together to form a cohesive whole, as well as providing you with practice SAC and exam questions that will help you prepare for whatever this year’s exam throws at you. I’m passionate about maths and will always be available to help you with any questions you have.
For my Studio Art students, I am well aware of how stressful it is for folio students to keep up with the workload, and I can’t even imagine what it would be like completing a folio during a pandemic. I want to help prevent this stress and pressure in my students, while helping you achieve the highest scores, by providing support throughout the year. This is super vital for all students completing folios, especially as you lost a lot of time spent with your teachers to coronavirus. I hope to provide you with a breadth of advice for succeeding in Studio, including providing folio support as you begin to refine your ideas and put together your final pieces, as well as providing and explaining example SAC and exam questions and answers that will help you feel more relaxed and confident in your knowledge.
I will also always be available to returning students looking for out-of-hours assistance on difficult questions/topics. I am also available pretty much any time, so just ask!
I am happy to provide tutoring online and in-person for high school students, however, I am of the belief that primary school students learn better in an in-person learning environment and as a result only offer in-person tutoring for students in Grades 5 and 6.
