Hello, and thanks for looking at my profile.
Literature can’t be learned by memorizing dates or analysing data. Succeeding in English requires
- high-level interpretive abilities,
- original thinking and
- excellent communication.
These are skills vital for your further education—and for life.
I have a PhD in English from one of the top postgraduate English programs in the US.
I am the author of 12 Insight Text Guides to VCE Literature texts. Insight guides are the only text guides written specifically to the requirements of the VCE exam.
I am a professional editor who also has years of experience teaching writing to young people in the classroom.
I’m also a stay-at-home dad with two teenage kids. I know the pressure you’re under!
What I Offer
The books and films on the VCE text list are chosen because they
- are ‘issues’ and ‘values’ oriented;
- have memorable characters and
- multiple themes, each of which can be associated with one or more of the characters.
We will pull your assigned texts apart using themes, characters and issues as our platforms for discovery.
Understanding the text is only the beginning. For most students the hard part is conveying their ideas into fluid prose in a well-designed essay. I’ve helped writers from year fives to university department chairs. I’ll teach you the many skills needed to craft a perfect essay.
I’ll be your first reader of assignments, and I can help you with your writing for other subjects.
My son is currently doing higher level Literature. I am familiar with IB English and will help you with the four different interpretive modes required in Literature and Language and Literature.
We’ll approach your texts and assignments in the way described in the VCE section—so next year you’ll hit the ground running.
It’s never too early to start working on the fundamentals: interpretation, original thinking and good writing. But continuing to develop your imagination is also important. We’ll go at a slower pace and talk more about the ‘big picture’.
MY LOCATION, COSTS AND AVAILABILITY!
I live in East Brighton, very close to Brighton and Hampton. I am within short walking distances of St Leonard’s, Haileybury and Brighton Secondary, and short drives (or longer walks from) Brighton Grammar and Firbank. I can tutor you in my home or in any of the listed suburbs (and possibly those adjacent to them). If you come to my house, or live within a ten-minute drive, the cost is $60 for a 50-minute session. If you are further than ten minutes, the cost is $65 for a 50-minute session. I’m very happy to do group sessions at escalating discounts (up to 4.)
