ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Sarah, thanks for looking at my profile!

I have tutored for over five years now and currently work as a Student Support Assistant at the University of Melbourne and as an academic tutor for undergraduate students at Queens College, Trinity College and Ormond College. I am planning to start my Masters study in Speech Therapy in 2023. I have taught piano privately and tutored both English Language and Music at the annual UMSU VCE Summer School since 2017. At a tertiary level, I have taught linguistics, academic writing skills and music (music theory, musicology and composition).

I have a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Melbourne. I graduated with a GPA of 87 and was twice named on the Dean's Honours List (top 3% of students). I majored in Languages and Linguistics with minor studies in Music. I have completed my 8th Grade AMEB piano with High Distinction and am currently working towards my associate diploma (AmusA). I also play the clarinet and flute.

I take a warm and friendly approach to tutoring and work to make sure my lessons are tailored to the needs of each individual student, design engaging activities and quizzes, and give valuable feedback on homework tasks.

English Language

- I focus on building competency in assessment types including short answer questions, analytical commentaries, and essays, and challenge students to think critically

- I reinforce understanding of metalanguage and other course content

- I take a practical approach with lots of examples, including some of my own research on Australian English. My aim is to get students engaged with language in the real world!

- For Units 1/2 (year 11), I have created an 8-week introductory course which covers the subject structure, a metalanguage for each of the language subsystems

Primary school

- I offer general help with developing reading, writing and mathematics skills

- I seek to develop skills without pressure using fun and creative approaches

- I prefer to tutor primary school students in-person
