I’m Philip and I graduated Melbourne High School in 2018, achieving a study score 49 in VCE English and an ATAR of 97.35. I’d like to offer dedicated tutoring that enables you to gain an abundance of unique insights and the ability to ‘think outside the box’ when analysing texts, which is an essential skill for any high achieving English student. VCE English can be a very head-scratching subject for many as we’re often told by our teachers to show ‘deeper analysis’ without being told how to. From my experience, every student possesses their own unique perspectives in analysing texts, but many struggle to fluidly articulate such insightful ideas in their essays and expand on them in order to create more complex analysis. My speciality is to help you observe and create links between those key points of analysis. What truly separates the high scoring English students from the rest of field is the ability to make connections between concepts and themes that seem unrelated on the surface. However, I promise you that with enough practice, this often vague and ambiguous approach to analysis that you never seemed to get a grasp on will become almost formulaic and easy to deploy to help you get A+ on your essays/SACs.
Personally, I studied ‘Rear Window’ (film), Medea, 1984 and Stasiland this year and as such I have numerous sample essays I could provide you with on these. However, if you are studying different texts I would be more than willing to read them and even write from scratch high quality sample essays so that you have an idea what to aim for. In 2017, Section B of VCE English exam changed from Writing in Context to Comparative analysis of texts. As someone who experienced first hand this new study design I will be to help you develop insightful points of comparison to use in your essays. For argument analysis, I will provide you with many articles and visual illustrations that will nurture your ability to find key points of outstanding analysis and express them with fluidity. I am also more than happy to read your practice essays even outside tutoring hours and will always aim to give you feedback through email within two days.
I will give priority spots to students in year 11 and year 12 who are currently studying VCE English. However, I am also happy to tutor younger students (year 7-10) who wish to get a head start on VCE English or just wish to improve their writing ability in general.
