Hey there! I’m Kelvin, a current student at the University of Melbourne. I am currently completing my Bachelors of Science majoring in Electrical Systems and I plan to start my Masters in Electrical Engineering in 2020.
I’ve tutored VCE Maths Specialist and Maths Methods for almost a year. I studied the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in 2015-2016 where I scored a 6/7 in Higher Level Mathematics and a 7/7 in Higher Level Physics. I graduated from International School Suva in Fiji with an ATAR equivalent of 96.75.
My passion for tutoring stemmed from the lack of available tutors during my time in high school. I was awarded a full scholarship to International School Suva and had transferred the next year from my local high school. The change in the level of mathematics was far too great and it was difficult to keep up with the other students. Having gone through all of that and now proudly being able to say “I made it!” with a 6/7 in HL Math, I know Math can be extremely difficult.
Now that I’m studying Engineering in the University of Melbourne, I am in a position where I can give back to the community and help students with their problems, to give them an opportunity I wished I had. In high school, I wondered how would I ever apply any of these math concepts. I’m sure you must wonder as well! It is difficult to learn math without knowing the context in which it can be applied. That’s where I come in! Engineering is all about the application of math and science! I don’t only want to be a tutor; I also wish to be a mentor, a role-model.
I aspire to help students understand the beauty of mathematics and its applications, to come to depend on mathematics as a tool, rather than shy away from its many layers of complexities. I have tutored students in various subjects, most of which are mathematics, for 2 years now. I tailor my teaching methods to every student. I organize my own material and tackle the main issue that is preventing the student from excelling. I am an engaging, confident, and enthusiastic tutor.
