Hello there! Thank you for taking the time to read my profile! My name is Fiona and I live in Success 20 minutes south of Perth.
My qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Asian Studies, a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) (post-graduate) and a CELTA Certificate (teaching English as a second language from the Cambridge University).
I have worked at several schools as a teacher of Japanese, SOSE, History, English and Religious Education. I have worked in both Primary and Secondary, independent and state schools and English language schools including NOVA in Tokyo, Japan.
In addition to my qualifications and experience, I am extremely passionate about learning, teaching and helping young people develop their inner potential, achieve academic success and a positive outlook on their studies and attaining future goals. My main areas of focus are English, literature, history and foreign languages; Japanese, French and Spanish.
I have three children of my own including a 15 year-old boy who has Cornelia de Lange Syndrome and very high support needs. My two daughters are very happy productive and friendly girls. One is a school senator, plays flute in a band, and loves drama, art and socialising with her friends. My youngest is shy and sensitive but has a number of friends now and loves school. She plays trumpet, is talented at drawing and sewing, and loves sea creatures. My son is non-verbal, blind, incontinent, suffers from medical conditions and is autistic. He requires a special diet, help learning sign language, assistance with dressing, toileting and feeding. He loves music, food, cars and trains. So, I have a strong understanding of children and their needs, interests, stresses and aspirations.
I can positively make a difference to a students’ learning and successful completion of exams and assignments because I have done these things myself and know what it takes to succeed. I can provide additional support by way of encouragement, teaching new strategies of learning, testing students and giving feedback, providing a fresh perspective and psychological support. Students often face psychological barriers to achieving their full potential in learning such as procrastinating, anxiety about tests, speaking in front of a class, complete assignments which can seem like huge mountainous tasks, fear of forgetting information, comparing themselves unfavourably with peers, stressing about adult expectations and so on. Sometimes, these are real barriers preventing students from achieving academic success and a tutor is highly beneficial to break down these barriers.
Academically, I can help students with understanding and tackling curriculum learning objectives. I can assist students with reading and writing, grammar, spelling, punctuation, creative writing, persuasive prose, poetry, and essay writing. I can also help students prepare for tests by assessing their knowledge, creating mock exams and giving them positive feedback and constructive criticism. I can help students with skills in foreign languages such as reading, writing, speaking and listening with projects to put these skills into practice or assistance with homework, assignments or test preparation. I have many resources to help with foreign language study such as dictionaries, textbooks, dvds, cds, storybooks and flashcards.
I am more than happy to help students during the week by providing my mobile phone number and email account details. So, if students are feeling stuck, anxious or even just have a question or two, I can get back to them and smooth the waters.
I am friendly, kind, caring and passionate about creative writing as well as learning about history and foreign languages. I have written an historical novel that I am currently editing. It is set in Europe in 1740 and is about 550 pages long. It involved me travelling to Europe twice to do research and attending an historical writers conference in Perth. I therefore feel quite successful at reading, writing, researching and editing and will be able to inspire your child.
I live in Success 20 minutes south of Perth. I can meet students at my home, at the students’ home or at a library. Weekend and evenings are good times for me to tutor. I have a reliable car and driver’s license. I am very keen to organise regular meeting times weekly or fortnightly. I also have a current Working With Children Card and a criminal history background check.
I am only charging $40 an hour. Please feel free to book me as your child’s tutor and I look forward to meeting with you both soon!
Fiona is punctual and friendly and kept me informed with her plans for my daughter’s tuition. I felt comfortable having her in the house and my daughter really enjoyed her first session with Fiona. I would recommend her.
Fiona is wonderful, the way in which she is tutoring my daughter is really bringing out the best in her abilities. I would highly recommend Fiona
