Hey you! Thank you for clicking on my profile. My name is Dominique and I’m currently studying Medicine at Flinders University. I’m originally Swiss and British, but have been fortunate enough to grow up all over the world (Switzerland, England, Singapore, and now Australia).
I’ve been tutoring French, my mother tongue, for the past six years and have loved it since Day 1. I’ve tutored children, from the young age of 5, to 18-year-old high school students. I’ve helped pupils sitting their IB examinations & VCE examinations (Year 11 and 12), as well as GCSE examinations (Year 9 and 10).
In 2014, I sat the IB and attained a score of 43 (ATAR equivalent of 99.7). I took the following subjects:
- Psychology HL (7)
- Film Studies HL (7)
- English Literature and Language HL (6)
- Maths Studies (7)
- Spanish Ab Initio (7)
- Chemistry SL (6)
I decided to sit the IB due to its flexibility, and frankly, I loved it! I really enjoyed studying a wide range of subjects, from humanities to languages. I’ve always been an avid learner, yet I only discovered my passion for teaching whilst taking part in a French mentoring program at my high school in Singapore in 2013.
Although I’ve been tutoring French for four years, my favourite subject at IB was Psychology, and therefore feel confident when saying I can also tutor and offer advice to any student sitting IB Psych SL/HL!
I have also completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Human Structure and Function, from the University of Melbourne.
MY APPROACH TO TUTORING:
Though I don’t believe there is a specific way to teach a subject, I do believe certain methods work better than others, especially for high school students! Using a 200-page textbook as a main learning tool, or having a teacher who takes no interest in your personal progress is certainly not the way to go.
In previous years, I’ve found most of my students lacked true motivation and confidence due to reasons mentioned above; so that’s why I make sure my lessons are the complete opposite. I take pride in making sure my tutoring is entertaining and insightful, yet remains educational. As every student learns differently, I provide individually tailored lessons centred around what works best for them, whether they be visual, auditory or kinesthetic learners. I also believe that through using different learning tools, such as funky worksheets, games, and having conversations about the subject itself, students are able to learn in a more wholesome and fun way. Such teaching methods have proved very efficient in my past experience, and have dramatically improved students’ confidence, motivation and overall grades in the subject. This is why I simply love tutoring: it’s fun, and its impact on students is tremendous.
