Hi! My name is Alex and I’m proud to be a LearnMate tutor.
I tutor humanity-based subjects and help students to enhance their essay writing skills. These subjects include English, History and Social Studies predominantly, but I am also flexible to tutor other writing/essay-based subjects e.g. Classics, Geography, Media Studies etc.
Having done my secondary schooling in New Zealand (end 2012) I passed my final two years of NCEA (ATAR equivalent) with Excellence grades, the highest grades achievable. Throughout these years, I studied English, History, Geography, Classics, Drama, and Religious Studies, receiving high grades across all subjects. I was Head Girl of my school and achieved my Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards in addition to my studies.
I graduated from Victoria University of Wellington with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Media Studies and Cultural Anthropology and I’m currently studying towards my Masters of Education (Secondary) where I’m specialising in Humanities and Media Studies. For the past few years I’ve worked as a professional copywriter for major brands across Australia and New Zealand, and have worked as a freelance writer for several publications. As a result, I have an excellent grasp of the English language and have extensive experience in writing professionally and creatively.
I also have experience working as a teaching assistant in a private prep school for students aged 3-13. Focusing heavily on one-on-one learning support, I helped students to grasp key content and better their grades across difficult subjects, as well as helping to build their confidence in these subjects.
I have a deep passion for English, History and Social Studies and I love to encourage students to look outside the box. I strongly believe that the humanity-based subjects have something to offer for everyone and that they instil strong skills in creativity, critical thinking, engagement and learning about the world around us. Through studying the humanities and helping students to not only better their grades, but to learn to love these subjects, I believe students develop excellent skills to further them in whatever pursuit they wish to follow after their schooling.
As a tutor, my top priority is to listen to students and discover their pain points BEFORE creating plans of action. Not all students learn the same and not all students have the same strengths and struggle points. I believe finding a student’s strengths and tailoring their learning styles to tackle school work is key in creating lasting change.
I provide students with:
- Free initial consultation to get to know each other and discuss focus points
- Comprehensive notes tailored to student’s own learning style
- Practice material to go over learned methods
- The option for in-person or online tutoring
- Reading over practice essays and offering points to discuss in following tutoring sessions
- Phone and email support 7 days a week
