I am an experienced tutor passionate about language and humanities education. I am well equipped with my educational and professional experience to help students enjoy and productively engage with their studies.
My Education and Experience
I graduated dux of St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School in 2014 with an ATAR of 99.5. This included raw scores of 50 for Literature and English Language, 46 for Philosophy and Media, as well as scores above 30 in Japanese, Theatre Studies and Music Styles & Composition.
I graduated from the University of Melbourne in July 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Philosophy and English & Theatre Studies for which I achieved first-class honours, as well as a Diploma of Languages in Japanese. I worked as a private tutor during my undergraduate studies from 2016-2018.
After graduating, I moved to Oita, Japan and worked for one year as an assistant language teacher in public kindergartens, elementary and junior high schools.
As of August 2020, I will be studying a Master of Applied Linguistics at the University of Melbourne, specialising in English Language.
When tutoring, I try to focus on developing the tools of clear language use and reasoning. We can learn to write effectively, engage with complex texts, and reason well by celebrating curiosity and doubt as strong positions from which to improve understanding through discussion, writing practice and reading. Tutoring can be a great opportunity to work out how an individual student can best achieve this.
Accordingly, the skills central to language and humanities studies we can work on include:
– Reading closely; engaging with textual detail.
– Developing critical responses; learning what makes a strong interpretation and argument.
– Understanding different forms of writing; recognising essay structures, question types, etc.
– Study skills, approaches, and resources.
I can tutor in the following subjects and areas of study:
VCE English Language
